Thank you for your question.   You have not provided details of your body weight or the specific reason why you chose an extra firm mattress in the first instance.

There is no evidence to support the theory that if you have back issues you should purchase a firm mattress, in fact, the recommendation from official sources tends towards the opposite.  A mattress needs to give you support, which is dictated by your body weights and then comfort which comes from the upholstery layers.

You are correct in thinking that you may be able to soften the mattress with the use of a topper and to that end I would suggest that you look at our Laygel topper which is made up of gel infused foam providing a soft support layer to your mattress.   Laygel is also not as heat retentive as memory foam and is more responsive.
