Returned 3 mattresses now and still having problems
Hello there. We had a superking bed by Mibed which was separate mattresses because it was an electric bed. We got it in firm because my husband has a back injury he also has PTSD and moves around a lot in the night and I am a light sleeper so was constantly disturbed. After a while it started to cause me hip pain. We bought a memory foam topper from Dunelm made by Dorma and it resolved our issues completely. No pain, no feeling my husband move. I wish we still had that bed. We then moved house and had to buy a new bed, due to space. We now need a king size. We bought an igel mattress from Bensons but there were so many issues with the wrong mattress being delivered that we asked them to take it back and that we would go elsewhere.
we then bought a firm Silent Night mattress from Argos, it was too firm even with our topper it was horrid. We switched it for a medium Silent Night and that was uncomfortable as well. We then changed to the mattress we have now and it’s a nightmare. It’s an Aspire 7000 pocket mattress medium/firm, We thought if we bought that and a topper the same as the one we had before it would feel the same as our old comfortable bed. It’s a disaster. I have major hip pain. I’m not sure if I have a problem with my hips or the bed is causing me the problem. We have been using it with our topper. It feels fairly comfortable at first but then my hips start to throb and I toss and turn. We took the topper off but although medium/firm it feels very firm. I think the hip pain is very slightly less without the topper but it’s trapping my arm and giving me pins and needles. The biggest problem is I can feel my husbands every move and I just can’t get any sleep. Please help I just want to sleep again
Hi Tracey,
Thank you for your question. The advice used to be that anyone with back issues required a firm mattress, but this is not the case. The correct level of support is essential from the pocket springs and the comfort layers based on your sleep positions.

Your Aspire mattress has a medium to firm level of comfort in the upholstery layers. Whilst these contain some natural fibres, the GSMs are not provided. This mattress also contains micro HD springs. We do not recommend these springs as they do not offer anything in the way of support but do take up space where more luxurious upholstery layers could be. The upholstery layers determine how the mattress feels, and this should be based on your sleep positions and comfort preferences. We do not recommend firm upholstery layers for side sleepers as this level of comfort, as you have found, can cause pressure pains in your shoulders, hips and even your knees. Likewise, we do not recommend soft upholstery layers for front and back sleepers as sinking in too much in these positions can cause lower back pain. For combination sleepers, we recommend a medium level of comfort, such as the Artisan Naturals or the Origins Pocket 1500, which is neither too soft nor too firm. A zip and link mattress is the only way to eliminate motion disturbance. All of our mattresses are available in the zip and link option in kingsize and above.
The springs within a traditional pocket sprung mattress provide the support and this is determined by your heights and body weights. The spring tension based on your heights and weights provides the correct level of support. Your current mattress has an orthopaedic spring tension, also known as extra firm spring tension, and unless either of you weighs at least 20 stone, you will not weigh enough to activate the springs. If the springs are not activated and moving with you throughout the night, then you are not supported. You essentially have a tabletop of wire with some upholstery layers and micro HD springs on top. These are then trapped between you and the springs that do not move, which means they then feel firmer.
| Spring Tension | Wire diameter (Gauge) | Weight Range |
|---|---|---|
| Soft | 1.2mm | Bespoke Tension (Please Call) |
| Medium | 1.4mm | Upto 16 stone |
| Firm | 1.6mm | 16 stone plus |
| Extra Firm / Orthopaedic | 1.9mm | 20 stone plus |
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419 and we will be able to advise you further.
Kind Regards
Michaela
