Separate topper or built in?

Would you recommend a mattress with built in topper or one where we purchase a separate topper? I am looking for a super king size mattress. We liked the Relyon mattress with built in pillow top but don't like the retailer who sells it. Also told that built in toppers flatten in time and that a good mattress is one that must be turned regularly (which obviously cannot be done with built in topper).

Hi Joseph,

This is a really good question which many people ask. The quick answer is that we would never recommend a pillow top mattress.

Pillowtop mattresses nearly always suffer from compression and sagging in the pillowtop layer first. Once this happens there is no way to remove the pillow top. So you are left with a mattress that can't be turned, because they are all one sided, and it becomes uncomfortable and useless. We have a detailed article on them here along with our review of the Premier Inn Hypnos pillow top mattress. They may feel amazing at first but a pillowtop mattress reduces the lifespan of the mattress you've just spent hard earned cash on considerably.

What is the alternative, you may ask? The alternative to a pillowtop mattress is a separate topper and mattress. Both of which should be two sided. This also has the benefit that if the topper compresses over time you can just replace this part, also if your body weight changes you can change the topper to tweak the comfort layer of the mattress. There are only a few exceptions for a one sided mattress which you can see here. All of our mattress ranges can be matched with our toppers and the Fusion and Hybrid range come with matching toppers as standard.

In order for us to recommend one of our mattresses, we would ideally need to know the body weights of the people sleeping on the mattress together with heights and ideal feel from the top upholstery layers or comfort layers.

If you could please telephone our office on 0161 437 4419 and speak to one of our Advisors, they will be able to assist you with a recommendation suitable fro you.

Kind regards Julie
