Should I buy a pillow top silent night mattress?

A customer asked

I have just ordered a Silentnight Diamond 2800 "Latex Luxury" Kingsize mattress, which has a stitched-on Pillow Top. After reading your generally adverse comments, advising against pillow tops, and also reading of some customers regrets at buying a pillow top mattress because of rapidly losing resilience and shape, I am a bit concerned. Being top of Silentnight's Diamond range, it is not a cheap mattress!

I chose a mattress with latex because I believe it is more resilient, more hygienic, and "cooler" than memory foam or polyester. I have also ordered a slatted wooden king size bed frame as base for the mattress. However, you did also comment that pillow tops are not a problem if filled with Natural Latex, which I believe the Diamond 2800 Latex Luxury pillow top is. I weigh 80kg (12stone 8lbs) suffer from heart problems, and need a medium-firm mattress to get a comfortable night's sleep. I definitely can't tolerate memory foam, as it sinks too deeply under my weight and feels much too "hot". What is your opinion of this mattress?

Would a platform divan be a better base for this mattress than a slatted wood bed frame?

I am a bit confused by all the technical hype - I just want a comfortable night's sleep!

Please help!

Thank you. >

Hi David,

Thanks for your question.

Having looked at the Diamond 2800 on Silentnight's own site I note that there are no details provided as to the fillings and construction of the mattress save for it having a Micropocket advanced pocket spring system and it contains "Innergetic" latex. This follows the feedback that we regularly find; Most retailers will not disclose how they fully construct meaning that we struggle to draw any comparisons or offer any opinions.

We would always advise against pillowtop mattresses as once the fabric compresses there is nothing you can do to salvage it due to the pillowtop layer being in-built.

We would always recommend a completely detachable topper instead as this allows you to flip and rotate the topper as well as the mattress assuming it is fully turnable.

Specific retailers know their own products inside out so if they only offer the divan base on their site, which they do, then in theory the mattress should be fine for use with that base.

Our own mattresses, save for our foam and latex ranges, can be used with slatted bed bases as long as the gaps between the slats are no bigger than 3". If they are bigger than 3" then you would simply need to purchase some MDF, plywood or pegboard to protect against indentation and damage. Our Foam and Latex ranges will need to go on a solid base otherwise they will attempt to settle in the gaps instantly.

100% Natural Latex has a cool sleep surface; Our Fusion range is constructed with this and the 4 different models have 4 different feels.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
