Side sleeper mattress ?

A customer asked

Could you possibly recommend a mattress for me?I'm a 9 stone, predominantly side sleeper. My husband is a 12 stone mixed back and side sleeper. We currently have a slatted base super king bed and a pocket sprung mattress (medium firm). I have always found the mattress to be too soft for me. My guest room has a orthopaedic mattress and I find this to be very comfortable. My ideal price range is less than £1,000 but if you think a more expensive option would be better then I might consider it.Many thanks

Hi there,

Thank you for your enquiry.

When advising upon the most appropriate mattress the first consideration is body weight as this will determine the spring tension. We then look at preferred feel and any particular way of sleeping i.e. side sleeper. In your case, the spring tension we would suggest is medium for both, neither of you have enough weight to suit a firm spring tension. We note that you, at your body weight, find a medium to firm feel too soft, although we would normally suggest that the medium spring is complimented by softer upholstery to provide the correct level of comfort for a side sleeper.

Please view the Origins Pocket 1500, which has a standard medium tension spring unit together with man made upholstery providing an overall medium feel. This would be ideal for your husband and may feel slightly firmer for you, which suits your preference.

I would also suggest that you look at the Origins Pocket Reflex 1000 which is firmer in the upholstery layers.  This mattress is a brilliant all rounder due to the fact that it is suitable for most body weights.

If placing this double sided mattress on a slatted base, we would suggest that you place some form of barrier, usually thin (3-5mm) MDF over the slats to provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats.

We trust that this helps, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
