Tufts on Artisan range of mattresses and Vispring

ViSpring use felt washer tufts on some of their mattresses and hand tied woollen looped tufts on others. A salesperson at Furniture Village said this was because some people feel the washers whereas they don't feel the ties. Hmm. I presume loops are more expensive because of the labour element, perhaps the more expensive Vispring mattresses are the ones with loops but I'm just guessing.
I've slept on both and can't say I've noticed the tufts at all on a new mattress. For info (it's not a deal-breaker!) what method of tufting do you use on your beds, and if it varies, why?

Hi J Wade,

First off I'm confused by the furniture village sales assistant. I think what they mean is some people feel tufts, well very, very few people do.  There's no way you can feel the washer over the tie, they are in effect, one of the same things, so not sure what's going on with that comment.

There's really only one way to hand tuft, which we do as do Vi-spring, Savoir and all other handcrafted top of the market companies, ie not many!

We tuft with mattress-upholstery-fibre/" title="wool">wool tufts in our mattress and they are also tied by hand. In fact, I can go a step further to detail this.

Before any mattress is tufted it has to be compressed, thinks a giant toasty maker that crushes the filled but not yet tufted or side stitched mattress, then by hand we use a big needle that then pierces through both sides of the mattress.  The tuft loop is then entered, the washer added by hand, and then the alternative washer on the other side tied and added. This is quite a labour intensive step, though the chap that does it on our range is lightning fast with the big needle.

If you want to see the needle and tufts 'pre tufting' then please visit this article. Once all the tufting is complete the machine that compresses the mattress slowly releases it meaning the tufts are then at full tension. The mattress is then taken to be tape edged and fully finished.
