Hi Elizabeth,

Thank you for your question on our website. The firmest upholstery layer within our ranges is the Artisan Bespoke mattress, which is constructed with 100% natural fibres and handmade calico pocket springs. The top layer has a little cushioning, but it provides a more supportive overall level of comfort. This is comparable to the Vispring Regal Superb in terms of comfort. Our Artisan range of mattresses has two rows of firmer springs along with hand-side stitching for edge support.

Domestic mattresses are not designed to be used more than an average of 8 - 10 hours at a time. When you are not in bed, the upholstery layers have time to rest and regain some loft. For customers who have to spend more time in bed, the upholstery layers do not get this rest and consequently, they compress quicker. If your partner requires more time in bed due to their condition, it may be better to consider a health bed which are designed to be used for long periods of time.

What type of base will the mattress be used on? The type of base can affect how the mattress feels. A pocket sprung base, like the Artisan base, will cushion a mattress, whereas a platform base, like the Contemporary Platform base, will firm up the internal support. Please note that our pocket sprung mattresses are not suitable for electric adjustable bases.

Comfort preference is subjective to each individual, what one person finds firm, another person would find too soft. The comfort layers of the mattress should be determined by not only how you like a mattress to feel, but also by your sleep positions. For example, if you are a side sleeper, a firm level of comfort could cause pressure pains in your shoulders, hips and knees. Likewise, we wouldn't recommend soft upholstery layers for front and back sleepers, as sinking into the upholstery too much in these positions can cause lower back and neck pain.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The spring tension is determined by your height and weight to provide the correct level of support. If you do not weigh enough to activate the springs, you will not be supported and would essentially have a tabletop of wire with some upholstery layers on top. Likewise, if you are too heavy for a spring tension, you would apply too much pressure on the springs and would not be supported.

I hope this helps, and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact our small, friendly team on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
