Vi Spring Cliveden and Highgrove mattress comparisons

Hi guys, I’m in the market for a new mattress. I’m sleeping on a “firm” mattress that is killing my shoulder and hips - I’m actually limping in the mornings (I’m a side sleeper). My body weight is currently at its highest due to stress (14 stone but is usually around 11.5/12 stone) and I am looking for a soft, high quality mattress. I’m quite broad-shouldered with a small waist (a typical female hour glass shape) which because I’m a side sleeper means that I’m struggling to find something that feels comfortable in the shoulder area (typically I tend to have lost all feeling in my left arm/hand in the mornings and my shoulders ache throughout the day). I’ve attempted to “soften” the mattress by putting a goose feather and down dual layer mattress topper on top (http://www.johnlewis.com/3343/Product.aspx) which has helped a little but not enough. I’ve been looking at Vi-Spring mattresses in John Lewis and agree with you that they are superb. Where I’m confused is that when I lie on a Vi-Spring Cliveden “soft” mattress (my preferred mattress, the one that doesn’t feel like I’m squishing my shoulder) it is much softer and more comfortable than a “soft” Vi-Spring “Highgrove” despite “Highgrove” being the more expensive of the too (neither of them are particularly, ahem, affordable for me at the moment, my budget stretches to only £2000 for a double mattress with matching divan). By the way I’ve tried to find a Vi-Spring Chatsworth, a comparison model to your Artisan Bespoke, in “soft” but none of the John Lewis shops in London carry the mattress in anything other than medium and/or firm which isn’t comfortable for my shoulder. I just don’t understand why there’s such a difference between the two “soft” mattresses despite both having the same tension. And if I order the Artisan Bespoke in “soft” would it still be too firm my me?

Hi EV.

Some good points and not particularly easy to explain.

The main point you question is why the 'soft' Cliveden feels different to the 'soft' Highgrove but unfortunately there is no information about the specification detail of The Highgrove.

We do know that The Highgrove is based on a double spring layer (same as The Cliveden) with a spring count of 2812 in a KS) - The Cliveden has a spring count of 2520.

The upholstery used in The Highgrove is unspecified, but we know it includes unknown ratios of cashmere and alpaca, to pure cotton, silk and Platinum Certified real Shetland wool.

The Cliveden upholstery is also not currently specified - the cutaway looks like it is wool, horsetail and wool and wool/cotton as the primary layer.

John Lewis used to give quite precise breakdown of component weight but not any more.

Anyway, to delve deeper into the differences between these particular models is currently quite fruitless.

In order to get a particularly good indication of the comfort tension of The Bespoke we would have said their 'medium' on The JL Chatsworth would be particularly similar in overall tension.

This is based on a 1.3mm spring and taking into account the total upholstery weight of just over 5000 GSM.

In your case this may indeed be too well built (considering that you were not keen on their Medium Chatsworth model) and so perhaps the Artisan Naturals (similar to the Regal Superb in overall tension) may be a better option for you and hence worth trying out to see what you think.

Hope this helps.
