hi there, interesting website and quite informative though its making me alot more confused because i thought i was getting there but obviously not!.....: (.... i used to think i had no sensitivity to mattresses whatsoever and they all felt the same to me....i only realised how wrong i was when we moved to our new house and slept on this new mattress we got at a liquidation sale. its a king size kingcoil spring comfort ( twin sprung and latex layer and extended by flex edge )..now its the mattress for the guest bed and we bought it not knowing what we are buying but it was supposidly discounted form 1500 to 360 at the liquidation sale so i thought it must be ok. IT IS NOT!...its bouncy and too soft for both of us and my lower back has no support- it doesnt hug me in anyway and i have to keep turning. anyway, we are now looking to buy a super king mattress for our own bed so i definately know i dont want a soft one or a bouncy one and i have suddenly become more sensitive when i try out the mattresses in the shops. so i was mattress shopping the other day and i seem to like two things: 1- spring pockets with no foam ( Kaymed sleep spa with gel concerto)...any of the gel ones i seem to like as opposed to the foam ones- i am finding the foam harder to move in. however the foam ones arent that bad if they are firm enough 2- spring pockets with natural fillings ( i tried the vi spring and the harrison). the vi spring involves too much money so its out. the harrison is more affordable- can you explain to me why the difference in price if they are both supposed to be natural fillings and hand made?

Hi Tamara,

I am going to try and answer your answers as I go through this.

Firstly, there is no need to give up on Vi-Spring just because you think they are too expensive. The basis of this site is the very reason why you should particularly seek out the traditional high-end mattress - the reason they are expensive is that they are good. Vi-Spring kindly gives you a breakdown (more or less) of the precise build of all of their mattresses from their low-end Traditional Bedstead to their top of range Magnificence, and the reason they do this is that they are proud of how their mattresses are built.

Harrison's tell you the number of springs they can cram in their mattresses - but trying to find out what quality and levels of upholstery used is virtually impossible.

Why is that?

The Harrison I liked is the Ruby 6000 ( I liked both the medium and firm) - I also liked the pearl 4500 ( i liked the firm only) I am trying to understand what is it in a mattress that makes me like it- firm seems to be what I like- my lower back is supported and doesn't feel like there is a gap behind it and that seems to make me feel comfortable. The Ruby has horse hair and more spring pockets and the medium felt really nice and huggy, so did the firm. The pearl, on the other hand, has no horse hair and less pockets and I found the medium soft for me but the firm was good.

If Harrison's are not telling you anything more than the spring count how on earth can you do any other kind of comparison.

The description says that it is.."A blend of horsehair, Hempure and wool together with a wool rich blend topping the warm for winter side and the renowned qualities of fine Egyptian cotton and a natural cotton blend on the cool for summer side" Without knowing how much of these 'fine' components are actually used to make up the upholstery - you are just banking on ther fact that all is exactly as it says. The challenge is my husband seems to like the ruby and pearl in the medium and likes the ruby more.He is heavier than me...he is 6ft3 and weighs 90 kgs, am 5 ft7 and weigh 53 kgs. Harrison can make the mattress half firm half medium if we want ( not zip and lock) , is that advisable or is it true that the surface will become un even?..

As you are planning to spend an awful lot of money on a mattress and all you are doing is taking the word of a salesman that it can be done without knowing HOW it can be done. I am not suggesting for one moment that anything untoward would happen, but really, if you are (quite rightly) concerned that the surfaces may become uneven, you really need to know the process of how they are going to achieve this split tension. Looking at their spring specification I personally cannot see how they are able to achieve it.

Perhaps Harrisons do not tell you what's inside the mattress because once you know, and have that comparison data, you will easily be able to find an alternative model.

To make your current mattress more comfortable i suggest you look at the White Linen Company and buy a mattress enhancer (this feather and down one seems a bargain for £140 (Double)) Hope this helps Tamara.

Please let us know if you get any response to your email questions from Harrisons.

Personally, I wouldn't hold your breath.
