Weight suitability
I have been recommended a soft mattress ( hybrid ) 1400 springs and memory foam layer but I weigh 12 stone plus. Is this correct? From what I’m reading here this will not be enough to support my weight. What would you recommend. I do like a soft feel but worry the soft mattress won’t support me. I sleep on my side. I don’t like a hard feel. I sit up in or on my bed a lot. I have bad lower back pain and leg mainly outer thigh where I lie on it on my current mattress. Thank you
Hi Jane,
Thank you for your question. It sounds like your current mattress is too firm for you. As a side sleeper, if the mattress is too firm, you can get pressure pains in those areas that push into the mattress, like your shoulders, hips, and knees. You may also find that you tend to pivot on those areas throughout the night, which can lead to additional pressure on your lower spine. This can result in discomfort and disrupt your sleep quality, making it essential to find a mattress that caters to your specific sleeping position.

Foams that are used as a comfort layer in a hybrid mattress (a mattress with both foam and springs) are available in various densities: soft, medium, and firm. Each density serves a different purpose, and as a side sleeper, opting for a soft density memory foam can be particularly beneficial. This type of foam is designed to contour to the shape of your body, allowing your shoulders and hips to sink in comfortably. By doing so, it helps to alleviate pressure in those key areas, promoting better spinal alignment and reducing the risk of waking up with aches and pains.
| Spring Tension | Wire diameter (Gauge) | Weight Range |
|---|---|---|
| Soft | 1.2mm | Bespoke Tension (Please Call) |
| Medium | 1.4mm | Upto 16 stone |
| Firm | 1.6mm | 16 stone plus |
| Extra Firm / Orthopaedic | 1.9mm | 20 stone plus |
In addition to the foam layers, the springs within the mattress provide essential support. They work in tandem with the comfort layers to ensure that your body receives the right amount of support while still being cushioned. I would recommend checking the specific spring tension or gauge of wire used within the mattress that you have been recommended. For your body weight, we would pair you with a medium spring tension. This balance of support and comfort can help ensure that you experience a restful night's sleep while minimising any potential discomfort.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
