A customer asked

Hi there, I'm in the market for a king size mattress and have stumbled across your brilliant site while researching. Problem is, I'm 6'6" and in the range of 21-24 stone (quite stocky, a bit overweight), and I have a very limited budget. I'm currently using a cheap spare coil spring mattress (not my preference) so anything will be better and hopefully stop my crippling morning back pain. I've read the benefits now of protecting the pocket sprung mattresses from slatted sprung frames with mdf and extra toppers will be on my shopping list, as will one of your "firmer" quality mattresses down the line. How do you think your mattresses would compare to this one I have seen and may be able to afford (it's on Groupon for £230 down from £800 odd). Would you steer well clear of this or is it somewhat adequate for the time being?

Would it disintegrate under my weight within a year?

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your question.

I've had a look at that mattress and would provide the following advice;

Given the fact it gives you no real details about the tension, spring gauge or fillings other than 'damask' which is just a patterned material I would avoid this mattress for your requirements. At best it will feel soft given your weight and as you mentioned very quickly sink and dip.

You would be wiser and more comfortable waiting and getting a more tailored suitable bed.

You would be better getting a very firm foam bed for the time being at least this wouldn't fail as quickly as the pocket sprung bed you've seen. Have a look at our Resilience range of mattresses. These are foam mattresses designed for the heavier sleeper.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact us on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
