Why are your mattresses so thick?
I’m pretty sold on your mattresses after navigating the minefield of modern mattress shopping, but they’re so thick! A friend who purchased one returned it last year because it looked silly in his room, and I’m concerned we’d have the same issue. We’d be using a bedstead as neither of us like divans.
We’re after a pretty firm mattress, suiting combo side/back sleepers. We’re 5’6/57kg and 5’10/75kg, and I sleep very warm. The Origin 1500 looks a good bet, unsure on medium or firm though. Any tips on how to choose tension without being able to try your mattresses in a store?
All of the alternatives we’re looking at are in the 22 to 26cm thick range. Is there some functional reason that yours are so much thicker?
Hi Gareth,
Thank you for your question. The depth of our Origins range is 13 inches (32.5 cm) due to the amount of fillings we put in the upholstery layers. A higher GSM (grams per square meter) makes for a more luxurious, longer lasting mattress in our opinion.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
Given the body weights you have supplied we would recommend a soft spring tension for the 57 kg person and a medium spring tension for the 75 kg person. The Origins Pocket 1500 has a medium spring tension that can be made firm for people who weigh over 105 kg. The upholstery in this mattress is a medium feel similar to the Premier Inn Hypnos mattress. There are some natural fibres in there but as you are a hot sleeper you may need to look at a mattress with more natural fibres.

Our Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 has a similar feel to the Origins pocket 1500 but contains 85% natural fibres which will give you a cooler sleep surface. With the Artisan range, there is the option of the soft spring tension which will give the lighter person the correct level of support. These are 12 inches (30 cm) in depth.

Is your bedstead base slatted? If so, we would recommend boarding the slats with MDF or Plywood if the space between the slats is greater than 3 inches (7.5 cm). This prevents the lumpy feel when it dips into the gaps which will damage your mattress over time and you will not get the support from these springs. If it is caged we would recommend placing an old blanket or duvet to protect the underside of the mattress.
I hope this was helpful, if you would like any further information please call the office on 0161 413 2668. Our office hours are 8 am - 8 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am - 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.
Kind Regards
