Is it Time to Re-Think The Way We Prioritise Sleep?

When it comes to self care, and keeping up with your health and wellness routine, getting enough sleep is always the most important factor. And not just any sleep, we at John Ryan know that quality sleep, on a regular basis, can have a huge positive impact on you both physically and mentally. This is why having a high quality Luxury Mattress that can offer you all the tailored comfort and support you need, is essential.

Of course, having a nutritious well-balanced diet combined with regular exercise is also key, but even the healthiest people are sacrificing their sleep time these days, leaving their health aspirations in tatters. So, is it time that we re-think the way we prioritise sleep?

The consequences of sacrificing our sleep

There’s a current mentality that says we must skip out on sleep time in order to get more work done, push harder at the gym for more hours, go out at the weekends, be the perfect parent, and keep everyone in our lives happy. But the reality is, this kind of lifestyle will soon see you completely burnt out.

A lack of quality sleep can lead to numerous problems, from weight gain and hormonal imbalance, to sickness and inflammation. Studies have shown that consistently depriving yourself of sleep can be more detrimental to your health than a poor diet, not getting any exercise, and being chronically stressed. We can trust in the power of mindfulness, meditation, herbal tea, green smoothies and more all we want, but none of it can make up for lost sleep.

Sleep deprivation can also lead to a higher risk of obesity, stroke, diabetes and heart disease. As you fuel yourself with caffeine, you might not feel the effects a lack of sleep can have straight away. However, it will harm you in the long-term, and even your ability to concentrate, remember things and learn new information will diminish.

Taking sleep seriously

Thankfully, the badge of honour mentality linked with getting less sleep is starting to shift, as more people are prioritising getting some shut eye in their wellness routines. Sleep tracking apps are everywhere, and there is a movement towards snoozing being less shameful and more of a health trend.

By joining this seismic shift towards getting better sleep, you can start reaping all the benefits that prioritising your snooze time can bring, including:

  • Enhancing your memory, allowing you to better organise and store your thoughts.
  • Lowering your blood pressure, which can decrease the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
  • Strengthening your immune system, through the production of extra protein molecules.
  • Keeping your weight under control, by regulating the hormones that affect your appetite.
  • Reducing stress and inflammation, as better sleep keeps you calmer and more controlled.

There’s no doubt that if you want to really be at your best, then the amount of sleep you get is just as important as eating healthily and exercising.
