Throughout the years we have dedicated ourselves to honing our craft in the hopes of making the most perfect mattress. And now we’re finally able to introduce – the John Ryan Legacy sleep system.

This groundbreaking mattress is truly a celebration of British origin and heritage, and we wanted to take you through all the magnificent materials we used to create the world’s finest handmade, all-Natural, and most luxurious mattress…

Turning back to traditional British quality

Even though we live in the age of mass production, where sadly many manufacturers turn to cheaper foreign imports. There has been a slow and steady movement back towards traditional made fabrics, which favour that quintessential British quality above all else.

We wanted to make a mattress that really captured the essence of Britain’s fabric weaving and upholstery manufacturing heritage. A mattress that evoked the spirit of weavers and cotton spinners from the days of the industrial revolution, who created materials of unparalleled durability and comfort.

This is why, where possible, we wanted to source every piece of fabric and upholstery fibers from right here in the UK. As a result, the John Ryan Legacy Mattress is uniquely made up of traceable 100% Natural Fibres.

Lancashire Legacy Wool for cover fabrics

Weaving in Lancashire is a timeless tradition that goes back centuries. Which is why we combed the county to find the best breathable and natural British Wool to manufacture our mattress cover fabric, and we found it with Mitchell Interflex. The 4th generation family run textile mill dates back to 1712, and inside, its expert craftsmen and women use their traditional fabric weaving knowledge to develop a faultless cover fabric thread.

Each yarn is hand threaded into Dornier Rapier looms to exact warp and weft thread counts. The painstaking and polished process ensures that no single thread is left unchecked. The fabric is woven to our own secret specifications, which are completely unique to the Legacy Mattress. We can say that we blend together two British dip dyed wool fibres, to design a fabric that is effortlessly beautiful and 100% Natural, with a matt finish that really highlights the purity of the wool.

18 months of meticulous technical work and dedication to detail produces a smoothness to the wool that simply can’t be matched. No other mattress retailer can say that they use their own handpicked woven Wool fabric, which has been entirely sourced and manufactured in the UK – but we can.

Yorkshire sheared sheeps wool for upholstery fabric

Our John Ryan Legacy Mattress upholstery is made from 100% British Swaledale sheeps wool and comes from Edward Clay & Sons, a traditional natural fibre merchants in West Yorkshire. The 4th generation natural fibre supplier has been around since 1870, and their decades of experience help them to produce the highest grade British Wool around.

We work with them at their original, and still working historical mill building to ensure all of our Wool upholstery in the Legacy Mattress is Certified Gold standard by the British Wool Board. The wool is sheared from the Yorkshire born sheep, then scoured and heated, before being needled.

Besides being incredibly breathable and naturally fire retardant, the high-quality Swaledale sheeps wool can easily wick away moisture and use its heat exchange properties, to keep you at the perfect temperature on the sleep surface of the Legacy Mattress.

UK sourced Alpaca fibre

Our Legacy Mattress is the first in the world to have British Alpaca as a natural mattress fibre in its upholstery. It’s sourced from independent Alpaca owners, who are all based right here in the UK. The Alpacas are only sheared once a year, and their limited numbers mean that true British Alpaca is not only one of the most expensive natural fibres, it’s also incredibly limited.

Each strand of Alpaca is much softer than other Natural Fibres, and the delicate white fibre is also very resilient and high wicking. Our independent Alpaca fibre processor, who is also based in the North West, carefully processes and cleans the fibre before it is needled onto cotton. After this has been done, it’s then ready to be used as upholstery in the Legacy Mattress.

After 13 years of dedication to quality and care, we have achieved our dream of designing and manufacturing the ultimate sleep experience. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating this revolutionary mattress, from its layers of 100% Natural British fibres, to its flawless fabric woven in true heritage style.
