January 2019

Is 2019 The Year to Replace Your Mattress?

A new year brings new beginnings, with many making resolutions to change things up a little, such as losing weight, stopping bad habits, spending more time with loved ones or exercising more. But could 2019 also mean that it’s about time you started improving the quality of your sleep with a new mattress too?

Getting a comfortable, consistent and supportive night’s sleep every night is crucial to your health and well-being. Whilst it’s true that certain medical conditions can lead to a lack of sleep, your biggest problem may be your mattress itself.

On average a mattress should last at least 7 years before you need to consider getting a replacement, which is a good way to work out your price per sleep. It’s true that some mattresses can last longer when treated with care, but if your current mattress is in anyway leaving you struggling to sleep well at night, then 2019 is definitely the year you need to consider a change.

What can John Ryan offer?

artisan luxury

At John Ryan, we are dedicated to crafting high-quality luxurious mattresses and providing an honest, open and professional service. We pride ourselves on providing mattresses that are as cost-effective as they are comfortable. All hand made here in the UK.

From our Zip and Link mattresses or traditional Pocket Sprung Mattresses that minimise the risk of rolling and offer support for differently weighted sleepers, to our Artisan Naturals that have 1600 pocket springs protected with a calico covering for an additional layer of long lasting support. Plus, there’s our Origins 1500 Pocket mattress, which utilises high GSM upholstery layers to help prevent sagging.

Before you make any decisions, let’s look at some of the reasons why you may need a new mattress in 2019…

If you’re getting that sagging feeling

Do you struggle to turn over in your mattress or feel like you’re stuck in a hollow? If so, then this is a clear sign that your mattress is overly worn or has started to dip. Dips happen when the support unit starts to fail or the upholstery has become compacted. This is especially true of one sided boxed foam mattresses, as you can’t turn them to even out the wear. If your mattress is quite old, then sagging can develop over time, causing you to experience discomfort and disrupted sleep, leaving you with aches and pains in the morning. When you observe sagging on your mattress, either under your sleep area or dips that don’t return to shape, then it’s time to replace it.

If you’ve experienced a physical injury or you’re in pain

suffering with back pain

If you’ve gone through any big changes in your physical health, such as surgery, being involved in an accident etc then this can all change what you need from your mattress in terms of offering you the right balance of support and comfort. Back pain is a common complaint which we can help with when choosing a tailored mattress to help you sleep better.

If you’ve lost or gained weight since you bought your original mattress

Most people overlook that over 7 years the chances of weight changes in sleepers is likely. Whilst a mattress can handle some fluctuation in sleepers weights; if you’ve been on a big health kick or gained weight you may need to reconsider your mattresses suitability. If you have lost a lot of weight it may be that your old mattress now isn’t suitable for you as it’s feeling rather firm or unforgiving. Likewise, if you’ve put on some weight you may find yourself sinking too much into your old mattress if it doesn’t have the necessary support. Mattresses support units are all built with weight tolerances in mind which the below table can help with.

If you’re sharing a bed

Maybe you’ve recently started sharing a bed with a partner, and have noticed that your current mattress causes you both to frequently roll together into the middle during the night. Do you have that feeling that every movement of your partner wakes you up as the movement transfers over to your side? Again, this can be the result of the mattress age, as the wear and tear of the support unit can lead to a dip in the middle of the mattress. Our Zip and Linked mattresses combat this by utilising split spring tensions.

If you’re moving home

If you’re moving and looking to live somewhere new this year then sometimes it will be far easier for you to consider buying a new mattress for the new home, instead of having to transport the old one across with you. Especially if your old mattress is showing signs of wear or is damaged, sometimes it is more cost effective to get the mattress collected by the council for recycling than trying to transport it.

If you’re looking to prioritise your sleep

There’s little point following through on all those health aspirations for 2019 if you don’t also include getting enough quality sleep time on a regular basis. Depriving yourself of a soothing snooze can have a huge negative impact on any of your healthy lifestyle plans for the new year.

By investing in a brand new, high quality Luxury Mattress for 2019, which gives you all the  tailored comfort and support you deserve, you’ll also be investing in your physical and mental wellbeing as well.

Remember, it’s important to ask as many questions as you need to in order to find the mattress that’s right for you this year, and make sure that you only spend as much as you can comfortably afford.
