Do curved sprung slats make your bed dip?
I have a set of sprung bed slats for my king bed. I purchases a plush mattress and felt it was dipping very slightly in the middle already. I believe this is from the curved bed slats not flattening out when I sleep on it. It gets worse when sleeping with my partner, I tend to be pulled towards the middle of the bed. Would it be better to return the slats and purchase flat slats?
Or keep the curved slats and layer a peice of plywood over that extends to the top of each arch as shown in your picture?
I heard that the curved bed slats are better and more durable and will prolong the life of the mattress. Also if the playwood route is the best, what thickness of plywood is reasonable?

The bed base can affect the mattress. If a sprung slatted base has a central bar running down the middle then the mattress will logically dip in the area that isn’t being supported.
Our advice with this is to purchase some standard sheets of MDF, plywood or pegboard and place this atop the slats to solidify the surface making it a uniform platform top. They would need to be no thicker than 3mm; This will just give a platform surface and eliminate this issue.
Sprung, or curved, slats are a bit more forgiving than solid slats but we’re getting more and more recent feedback that dips are appearing in mattresses that are supported by one of these bases. If you prefer to replace them with solid slats then that should also be fine and this is down to your own preference. All I’d advise is to check the measurements of the gaps between the slats. If they are bigger than 3″ then you will need to solidify the surface anyway.

Surely the advice to place a solid sheet under the mattress would cause a problem with moisture being trapped? I thought the point of the slats is to provide ventilation?

Thank you for your question.
Our John Ryan mattresses are fully breathable and also require turning/ rotation regularly for the correct care and maintenance, therefore we do not have any problems when it comes to moisture being trapped and causing mould or damp.
Mould on a mattress is down to the environment rather than the mattress itself.
You can use our mattresses with a fixed slatted base as long as the gaps between tha slats do not exceed 3″ however, it is said that a mattress performs to the best of it ability when placed on a uniform surface whether that be a sprung or platform divan.
