Hand side stitching detail required for Mumsnet mattress?

Harry asked
16th January 2019

I’m interested in a Dreams Mumsnet mattress with 3,000 springs.

After reading your comments on hand side stitch edge springs I can not find any info on this within the description/spec for this mattress. I also can’t find any detail about the upholstery and what makes it such as ultra firm mattress? I’m looking for a firm mattress but not sure if this will be suitable?

Have you any comment on this matter or advice on choosing the best mattress type?

Thanks.

Hi Harry,

Thank you for your question.

This is a 3000 pocket sprung mattress and the retailer in question should be more than able to give you all the information you require. The fact it has 3,000 shows its either a dual spring unit or uses the frankly pointless micro springs.

As a point of note, mattresses that retails within this price range (around £1000) will rarely utilise Hand Side Stitching as the amount of time taken to hand side stitch is considerable and usually reserved for high-end mattresses.

You can also see on the Mumsnet mattress that it has been machine side stitched. You can tell this as side stitching causes a chequerboard finish as the springs have been tied t the panel. On the Mumsnet mattress is completely flat. Which means that the panels are just stitched by a machine to give the illusion of hand side stitching.

You should also be looking at the quantity of upholstery used in the mattress as well as the mattress detailing.

The Mumsnet mattress doesn’t give you any detail on the GSM of the upholstery used within it which you need to both compare and see if the mattress is value for money. It simply states:

  • Natural cotton & wool layers for breathability and moisture control
  • Natural alpaca & bamboo layers with antibacterial properties

This could be 500GSM or 5,000GSM but without the detail, you simply don’t know! We would hazard a guess these are blended fibres with a polyester mix for this price point. Especially given its rated as an extra firm mattress and cotton and wool are soft fibres. In particular Alpaca and Bamboo are ultra-soft layers so there must be a dense polyester blend in this model to firm up these fibres.

I would say our Artisan 1500 or Origins reflex will give you a better mattress for your money if you’re looking for a firmer feel mattress. The Artisan is hand side stitched where the Origins is machine side stitched. The difference in price point will help you see whether the Mumsnet is worth the £1000 price tag.

If you want to know exactly what your money will buy you when choosing a new mattress we have a handy table below.

£750The beginnings of a basic pocket springs unit with 800 – 1000 count. No substantial amount of filling other than foams and synthetic materials. Two sided models.
£1000Should get you away from most low ranges and into the mid-range pocket spring models.
