How to compare Hypnos and Vi Spring mattresses

Henning asked
14th March 2012

Hi John and Ryan, I’m a bit confused about specs. I’m looking at three mattresses: the Hypnos Sandringham, the VI Spring bedstead Supreme and your Artisan Bespoke. Whilst your Artisan comes in at the same price as what I can find the VI Spring for, the Hypnos seems to have a remarkable spec – apart from the absense of horsehair. That, and it’s £400 cheaper. Can you help me tell them all apart?

I can compare the specs where VI Spring and the Artisan are concerned, but the logic goes out the window when reading the Hypnos specs… Many thanks for a great site. Regards, .

Hi Henning, Good question.

Lets see what we are faced with: Hypnos Sandringham: The reason you are faced with a ‘Which is better’ dilemma is the fact that Hypnos is not providing you with any kind of specification breakdown. I do accept that at times this is not the bee all and end all but it should be there in order for you to make a start for an adequate and fair comparison.

The following is the official description for The Hypnos Sandringham:

[OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION] Upholstered with naturally soft and breathable layers of Wool, luxurious Cashmere, Alpaca, Mohair, Camel Hair and Silver, which help regulate body temperature and to ensure a fresh and hygienic night’s sleep.

Covered with a Silk infused Belgian Damask to provide a soft and cool surface Tailored with 5 rows of genuine hand side-stitching for edge to edge support, and hand tufted for long lasting comfort. The upholstery description requires further investigation: Cashmere [which, at this quality of build, I would expect to be the insulator – no spunbond] I would expect to see a weight of 1000 GSM. Mohair: This could also be the insulator, but equally it could be the support layer on top of the cashmere. Again 1000GSM would be expected for this model. The final two comfort layers of Alpaca and Camel hair – an expected combined weight of 1200 GSM {600 of each). The five rows of genuine hand side stitching indicates that EVERY stitch in the side panel is done by hand – Is It? Five rows of HSS is an extravagance and represents a good few hours of labour. Has the filling content been compromised in order for this to be done?

Only by phoning Hypnos customer service direct on 01844 348200 and asking them direct will you have the essential info you require to make a fair and adequate comparison. The spring unit is also a consideration. Calico encased [as in Savoir / Vi Spring and ours] is the long standing traditional method of spring support. Hypnos’ Ultrasens 17 is unique to them and so comparisons on this component cannot be made.

The Vi Spring Bedstead Supreme: [OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION] Upholstered with a wool spring protector pad, then 1,000gsm bonded British fleece wool and cotton, plus 1,200gsm long-stranded horsehair, enclosed in a hair-proof cambric cover and finally overlaid with 1,200gsm blended British fleece wool and cotton. Covered with your choice of finest quality Belgian ticking from the Vi-Spring collection.

Using our Artisan Bespoke as the comparison, I think our Bespoke is far superior. Please see the table below showing a comparison of our Bespoke to the Vi Spring Herald;

I would also say our Artisan Luxury at £1735 Kingsize is a far better build / buy as well.

Now you have the specification data it is an easy job of doing like for like comparisons. Your stumbling part in all of this is The Hypnos Sandringham. Once you get confirmation of the component weights and breakdown it will be incredibly easy to do a like for like comparison on all these models. However, I do have an inkling that you will not be given the information you require !!

I trust this helps Henning, and please call the office on 0161 437 4419 to let us know what you find out!

Kind regards,
Amy.
