TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Lower back pain

charlotte asked
5th December 2016

Hi. My husband and I have a Tempur mattress which we bought 10 years ago when husband had terrible back pain in the morning. We were amazed at how quickly his back pain disappeared once we started using the Tempur – literally overnight. Now, 10 years on, it’s my turn. I’m 52, 9 stone and wake up every night and have to lie on my tummy to get rid of the pain in my lower back. After about 5 mins I can get back to sleep again. But then in the morning, I’m so stiff I can’t put socks or shoes on for at least an hour after I get up (after which it usually subsides, but am left with general stiffness for the rest of the day). I’m assuming the Tempur is due for a replacement anyway? It’s currently placed on a board – no springs anywhere. We both like a firmish mattress – tho I can’t sleep on my daughter’s ikea rock solid mattress, so clearly I need some sort of comfort factor. Would be interested to hear which mattress you would recommend for us both (husband is 5.10′ and approx 13 stone). Our budget is ideally around £1K (tho I’d be prepared to spend more if it would guarantee me a good nights sleep and reduced stiffness!). Many thanks.

Hi Charlotte,

Many thanks for your enquiry.

When advising upon a new mattress we take into account body weights, preferred feel, budget and any associated issues such as back pain. In your particular case, although the Tempur product relieved the issue with your husband’s back, it now appears to have firmed up somewhat and is not providing the right level of support and comfort required by your body weights. This is not helped by the use of a board underneath, which will increase the firmness.

With your body weights, we would suggest a medium spring tension/feel mattress and would advise that you look at the Hybrid 4, which has a similar feel to the Tempur Cloud and has a separate topper. This will provide you both with a medium feel.

Alternatively, if you are minded to move away from foam and go for a pocket sprung mattress with either natural or man made upholstery, please view the Origins Pocket 1500 or the Artisan Naturals, which are the best selling products in their respective ranges as detailed at the foot of this response.

The Origins Pocket 1500 has a standard medium spring tension and man made upholstery, which will provide an overall medium feel. The Artisan Naturals on the other hand has 85% natural upholstery and can have the spring tension selected as soft, medium or firm as required.

Please be aware that we can offer no specific guarantee in respect of the alleviation of you back issues, but feel that the above products may provide some level of relief. We trust that the above helps, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419, kind regards.
