Pocket spring count – Artisan v Somnus

Tony asked

Hi, we are looking to replace a Tempur mattress which we just find we cannot get on with, as we both feel it is giving us back problems. I like the look of your Artisan range, but wonder if you are aware of the difference between this range and the Somnus range of beds, as they claim enormously higher spring count, due to the fact they have smaller springs above the main springs in their beds.

Their top of the range Connaught has 32,000 springs! But your top of range has about 2500.

Clearly there is not a like for like comparison as the two beds cannot be that far apart, I suspect.

I am 6’2″ and 15st, my wife is 5’7″ and 10st. We generally prefer slightly firmer mattresses, and we have an existing unsprung non-slatted base we would like to keep.

Hi Tony,

Thank you for your enquiry.

Spring count is not a good way to compare mattresses. Normally, for people of average body weights, which you both are, 1000 spring in a king size mattress are sufficient to provide adequate support. Whilst the Connaught may have 32,000, this does not necessarily make it a better bed.

The higher spring count is achieved by using layers of mini springs on top of the main spring unit, however, those mini spring layers take the place of other layers of upholstery and we are not convinced that they bring that much to the table in terms of the comfort.

You should not compare the highest price in the Somnus range to our Artisan Bespoke 002 as Somnus do not disclose full details of the upholstery in terms of GSM (grams per square metre), which makes comparison impossible. Likewise, because the 002 is our most expensive, it does automatically mean it is the right mattress for you

With your particular body weights we would suggest that you opt for a medium spring tension and we would suggest that you look at the Artisan Naturals, the best seller in that range, the Artisan Bespoke 004 or the Artisan Bespoke. All of these products can have the spring tension selected to suit and all have natural upholstery.

The Naturals and 004 have a similar feel in the upholstery layers, medium, not too soft and not too firm, whereas the Bespoke has more upholstery but will provide a firmer feel than the other two.

The Naturals has 85% natural upholstery with both the 004 and Bespoke having 100%.

The Artisan Bespoke 002 has the same upholstery as the 004, but has a double spring layer, providing a bouncier, more forgiving feel.

As far as using your current base is concerned, we would always advocate placing some for of barrier, usually thin (3-5mm) MDF, over the slats to provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats. This is particularly important with the Artisan range, which are all double sided.

We trust that the above is of help to you, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards.
