Why do pillow top mattresses sag?

Aisha asked
10th September 2013

I bought a Silentnight Miracoil 7 kingsize which has an integrated pillow top. After 6 months it started sagging over to my partners side – he is a lot heavier and taller than me but he is not overweight. The top has sagged over so much now ( just over a year after purchase)that its difficult to put over the sheet and mattress protector. It is only the top part (the pillow top) that has pushed out over the main body of the mattress. I do really wish I had bought the separate mattress topper as you have recommended but now I am stuck with this one.

Is there a way of repairing it or can I cut off the top layer and then buy a mattress topper?

Any advice much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Aisha,

Thanks for your question.

As you mention we always advise against pillowtop mattresses; There are a number of reasons for this but as you yourself have found the fabric completely compresses after a relatively short period of time and once it does there is unfortunately not a lot that can be done to resolve the problem.

As such, this is the reason we always recommend using a completely separate detachable topper as this gives you the option of regular flipping meaning that you can extend the lifespan.

With your current mattress, I wouldn’t recommend cutting into that top layer as you’re potentially just going to cause even more damage. A solution here might be to completely flip the mattress over and use a separate topper. You’ll find that the underside of the mattress will often be very firm and as such very uncomfortable so don’t sleep directly on this without adding a topper.

I’d advise checking for a removable topper online. You can see our toppers here. Other bedding retailers have a wider range of mattress toppers than we do and you should be looking at something along the lines of Wool or Microfibres.

I hope this assists but if you have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact our small friendly team on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
