Will a rolled pocket sprung mattress damage springs?

Steve Green asked

Hi, very helpful website. We have just received a (supposedly) pocket sprung (2000) mattress with memory foam topping which arrived vacuum packed and rolled up. Surely if it is pocket sprung then this treatment would damage it?

I am now very unsure about the quality of what we’ve bought!

I’d really appreciate your view on this – thanks, Steve

Hi Steve,

Very good question about whether or not pocket springs would be damaged when rolled for a boxed mattress. The question is why should they be rolled?

The quick answer is that yet rolling mattresses nearly always causes some damage whether it’s torn from from stress or glue adhering layers together because the mattress has not been allowed to dry properly before being crushed and rolled. See the IKEA rolled mattresses below.

Why are some cheaper matresses rolled?

The main answer is cost and storage space.

Incidentally all cage sprung / Bonnell springs delivered to the factory arrive tightly rolled from the spring manufacturer as are most entry level pocket spring sheets [discounting calico encased springs].

Usually, vac packed mattresses will have no kind of perimeter banding hence a lack of edge support. This will give the feel that you’re rolling off it you get too close to the edge. You will find this with the recent flood of mattress in a box companies such as Eve, Casper and Simba.

Foam encapsulated units utilise the foam borders as the edge support.

Vacuum packing is a major benefit to the manufacturer and retailer and to a lesser extent, the consumer.

Why are beds rolled?

The manufacturer (and retailer) saves a small fortune in delivery and storage costs and if these are passed to the consumer then all well and good.

The only benefit to a consumer to have a vac pack mattress is if delivery and access is problematic ie tight 90 degree bends and low ceilings. However, we have written extensively about boxed and rolled mattresses. How they suffer from damage if left boxed for any significant amount of time. So it depends how long the retailer had that model in storage? Days, weeks or even months? All degrading.

Examples of Rolled Boxed Mattresses:

  • The Emma Mattress
  • Casper Mattress
  • Eve Mattress
  • Leesa Mattress
  • MADE Mattress
  • Nectar Mattress

Why don’t John Ryan roll their mattresses?

We don’t design or sell any rolled mattresses, we couldn’t roll ours even with machinery. Due to the high loft of fillings and spring units. We would advise that you really consider whether delivery of a boxed mattress is more convenient than years of quality sleep on a none damaged mattress!

Have a look at our Origins 1500 best selling Pocket Spring mattress for what you should expect for around the £600 mar for a kingsize mattress. You will see just how much more you can get when compared to boxed foam mattress models.
