MDF on slatted base

A customer asked

Hi there Thanks for the post. I currently have a slatted pine double bed base. I bought it new 9 years ago with a sprung double sided mattress. I sleep in the middle and over at least the last 4 years or so the mattress has slowly concaved in the centre now to the point where I really get backache when I sleep for too long. I need to do something about it but don't want to invest in a new mattress (I will likely go for similar sprung mattress) if the pine base will not be supportive enough. The MDF idea sounds like a good one but I'd rather just go for a full bedset it that's a better option. Only thing is I really like the pine base because I store lots of stuff under the bed. I am about 70kg and I like a firm base. Can you advise?

Hi Mary Anne,

Thanks for your question.

Given that you disclose that the mattress is concaved in the middle and you say that you sleep in the middle it makes sense that this is the reason why.

Any mattress needs to have the entire sleep surface slept on to iron out any dips and ridges.

In order to discuss suitable models with ourselves we would need to your preferred feel in the top layers as this is what provides you the comfort.

At your body weight we would match you with a Medium spring tension to get the right support;

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

We have 2 pocket sprung mattress ranges; Origins and Artisan. The Origins range is constructed using synthetic fillings whereas the Artisan range is constructed with natural fillings; Ideal for anyone who identifies as a hot sleeper.

We could also do a shallow base for you in our Contemporary Platform Divan line - We could do the base to 6 inches in depth at the lowest and then 6 inches for wooden leg allowing storage underneath. This would obviously be dependent on the size of the items going underneath.

A shallow base would be classed as a bespoke size so will carry an additional charge of 10% on the standard cost and these don't carry our standard 60 day love it or return it guarantee. Please see our article here for further information on bespoke sizes.

Our advice regarding MDF on a slatted base is to place some over the base if the gaps between the slats are bigger than 3 inches. This is to protect the mattress from indentation and damage but this will differ between retailers as different retailers logically have different construction methods.

Please come back to me at your earliest convenience to discuss this further on 0161 437 4419. We are open Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Kind Regards, Lee.
