Is a firm mattress good for sciatica?
Hi, i need some advice before i order a bed from you.
I have sciatica and compressed muscles in my back .
it always feels better when i have slept on a firmish bed, at the moment i have a cheaper version of the tempura and its no good for my back so reason for changing, i have chosen the 1500 pocket sprung bed would this be medium to firm i weigh 12 and a half stone.
would also prefer a mattress that can be turned every now and then.
Thankyou >
Hi Irene,
Thank you for your enquiry via our website. Sorry to hear you're experiencing back problems. The advice used to be for any back problems you needed a firm mattress but that is not the case anymore. The correct spring tension for your body weight and comfort layers that are not too soft but nothing so firm that you're simply resting on the very top of the bed.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
For your weight we would advise that the medium should offer more than enough support. For the sciatica, based on feedback from other sufferers who we have spoken to, the last thing you want is something too firm which may exacerbate the problem. I think a firm mattress at your weight would be overkill.
The Origins Pocket 1500 is a two-sided mattress fully turnable. This mattress, with it's medium spring tension will give you an excellent all-round medium feel mattress I would advise that with your back problems you ensure there is someone that can either help or turn the mattress for you as they are quite substantial and therefore heavy.
