Hi John and Ryan!

I stumbled across your website in search of mattress reviews and am very impressed!

If you can spare a few minutes, I'd be interested in your views on the following: My wife and I want to buy a new bed. We will buy a super king (i.e. 180cm wide), we both tend to sleep on our side and I weigh 90kg, my wife 60kg. We have been to a number of shops to try out mattresses and have narrowed it down to two, which both feel equally comfortable to us. Either the Vi-Spring Herald (which comes with the Prestige Divan) in medium firmness http://www.Vispring.co.uk/the-collection/luxury-beds-and-mattresses/luxury-beds/the-herald-superb or, alternatively the John Lewis Natural Collection Cashmere 14000 Mattress in firm http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-natural-collection-cashmere-14000-mattress-kingsize/p557292 As I said, they both feel equally comfortable to us and they are about the same price (I think the Vi-Spring Herald is normally a bit more expensive but it can currently be had in a "spring sale" which brings it down roughly to the price of the John Lewis). So we are wondering whether we should go for a high-end model of a lower price brand (i.e. the John Lewis) or a more basic model of a high-end brand (i.e. the Vi-Spring). What do you think?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Andreas,

Thank you for your enquiry on our website.  I note that you are asking for a comparison of two mattresses made by two manufacturers.  It is not possible to compare these two mattresses as their construction and composition are completely different.  Having said that, I am able to provide some guidance and direction from the information you have provided.

Taking into account your body weights, I think that the inclusion of 14000 springs in the "mattress-comparisons-alternatives/" title="John Lewis">John Lewis Natural Cashmere" mattress is, for want of a better phrase "overkill" and is not necessarily the best mattress for you both.  When there is this amount of springs they tend to be mostly the small high-density springs that take up space away from the comfort layers.  At your body weight, you would need a medium spring tension whilst your wife would ideally require a soft spring tension, to give you both the correct level of support.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The specification of the "Herald Superb", has 1476 Calico encased springs and upholstery consisting of 1000 GSM of Bonded Fleece Wool & Cotton, 1200 GSM of Long Stranded horsehair and 1200 GSM of Blended Fleece Wool & Cotton, giving a combined upholstery weight of 3400 GSM.

It is unfortunate that I cannot provide a similar breakdown for the "John Lewis Natural Cashmere 14000" (manufactured by Harrisons) as they do not divulge the specific upholstery weights.

I can see by the models referred to that your budget is in the region of £2000 to £2400. Might I also refer you to our Artisan Bespoke 004, which has a similar upholstery specification to that of the Vi-Spring model above and similar calico encased springs?  This retails at £1580 for a Kingsize see here and can be provided in a split tension (soft/medium) making it suitable for you both.
