Very impressed with your knowledge John. My wife and I are about to buy a new mattress. I am about 14.5 stone, she is about 10st. We bought the Marriott Hotel super king bed about 3 years ago after staying in a Marriott hotel and found it quite comfortable, but over past year I started to find it too hard. I didn't realise it was open coil sprung and not sure the innards are the best quality. We want to upgrade to a pocket sprung mattress which we really should have done originally. Have been looking closely at The White Company mattresses which are by Hynos. They have the Connaugt, which is softer but is really comfortable and also the Brompton which they say ihas an 'orthopaedic feel' and is firmer. Have tested both out in store and the Connaught seems slightly in favour with us. Don't know from our body weights etc whether we should be going for something firmer or not, but don't want to make same mistake again of too hard a mattress. We want to buy the super king size but the shop, advice is not overly helpful. Can you advise us on which you think may be best?

Many thanks!

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your enquiry on our website.  Advising which is the better of the two mattresses you refer to is impossible because, as I am sure you have established, there is no detailed information available with regard to the upholstery layers by way of GSM (grams per square metre).  The descriptions provided on the White Company website are very vague and quite general.

When purchasing a new mattress the most important factor to consider is the spring tension.  As it is the springs that support you, the correct spring tension for your body weight is essential.  Incorrect springs tension can lead to back pain and discomfort.  At your body weight, you require a medium spring tension whereas your wife, who is borderline between the soft and medium springs would get support from both.  If she prefers a firmer support she should choose the medium spring tension.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

With the correct spring tension, the upholstery is then determined by personal preferences, such as whether you want a mattress you can sink into (soft upholstery), a slight sink but not too much (medium upholstery) or no sink in, more of a lie on feel (firm upholstery).  The comfort layers will also be determined by sleeping habits, ie whether you are a side sleeper, back sleeper or front sleeper or a combination of all three.

Perhaps, it may be worth you viewing the mattresses in our Artisan range, all of which have a complete breakdown of the natural fibre upholstery layers on their respective description pages, most of which contain calico encased pocket springs. Some of the mattresses in this range are also comparable to certain models in the Vi-Spring range.

If you would like to discuss the suitability of any of our mattresses please call the office on 0161 437 4419. Our office hours are 8 am - 8 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am - 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Kind Regards

Michaela
