Will sprung slats break?

A customer asked

Good morning,
Firstly can I please say thank you for your very informative website.
I just want to make sure I have absorbed the correct information.

I have an extremely heavy pocket sprung superking mattress and have just bought the most beautiful bedstead, it did however, come with sprung slats, of which I have never had before.

Now those, coupled with a heavy mattress and my weight of about 15 stone, the springs bow quite considerably. My worry is that they will break on me.

So from what I have read I need to cover the slats in a piece of MDF or peg board 2-5mm thick. Is this correct?

I live alone and my concern is should someone stay the bed slats will break and assume putting the mdf there will make the bed more substantial and solid?

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Katie,

Thanks for your question about slatted bed bases and heavier high end mattresses. You're right in knowing that with most slatted bases you may need to board them over.

The application of the MDF sheeting will provide a uniform surface upon which your mattress can sit and will make the mattress feel firmer.

I cannot confirm if the slats will break or not, but would say that they are usually manufactured to accommodate varying body weights and weighty mattresses however please see link attached which explains all about slatted bases.

I hope this assists but please do not hesitate to contact the office should you require any further assistance on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
