Do slats firm up a pillowtop mattress?

A customer asked

Hello,
I recently bought a queen bed frame with the sprung slats as shown in your pic above.

However, prior to that we bought the most comfortable queen size pillow top mattress which had a soft/medium support and felt as if you were moulded to the bed. We slept on this mattress on a carpeted floor for few weeks but it was so comfy!

Now that we have put the mattress on the sprung slats the mattress feels bit harder and bouncier so to speak. What can you recommend we use on top of the slats to achieve the same effect as we had before on the carpeted floor!

Please help as we have had sleepless nights!!

Hi Lisa,

The sprung slats may be to blame for the bounce feeling as they will provide some ‘give’ to the mattress as they compress compared to the floor. It’s really difficult to say how to exactly replicate the feeling of the carpeted floor. We would advise against sleeping directly on the floor as carpet and underlay are not the most breathable of materials and condensation/mould could occur if the mattress isn’t regularly turned or aired.

We also recommend that with slats you board over them for consistency, this stops the gaps from the slats causing lumps or bumps in the mattress. This is a relatively cheap way to provide the consistency that maybe missing.
The other alternative would be to place some carpet on top of the sprung slats and see if this replicates the previous feeling. We would advise that you will need to rotate the mattress every month to even out wear, especially since pillow tops are one-sided and cant be turned. Also by rotating it you can make sure there’s enough ventilation if you go for the carpet option as the drawback may be that it traps moisture.

Unfortunately, we can’t give you a definite answer, just a few options to try out.
