Yet another bad back mattress question

Hi,
Looking to replace our existing 'own label' memory foam mattress. I have a bad back which needs support and had a look at your website. Equally considering the likes of Simba, Eve etc. We have a slatted bed and am wondering what kind of mattress you would recommend. Also while looking at the Fusion mattress it seems to have grades like B, C, D etc. What do they stand for?

Hi VK,

Thank you for your questions.

As you are probably aware, the advice for people with back issues used to be to opt for a firm mattress, however, that advice is now being contradicted with organisations such as the Institute of Chiropractors confirming that what is required is a mattress with support provided by the spring unit and comfort being provided by the upholstery layers. If you look at the reviews for the products you refer to, you will note that they are not always complimentary and I would suggest that if you do suffer with your back, you avoid these.

As far as the grading of the Fusion products are concerned, these are only in respect of our Outlet products and relate to the standard ranging from grade B to grade F details of which are provided at the bottom of the screen in the outlet for each product. All the Fusion products on the main site are brand new and made to order and are not therefore graded.

We have two different pocket sprung ranges. The Origins is the synthetic fibre range and The Artisan is the naturals fibre range.

The Origins Pocket 1500 is a fantastic all round medium feel mattress, the mattresses in this range come with a medium spring tension as standard therefore this model will provide a slightly different feel dependent on the individuals weight. The Origins Pocket range should be the most you pay for a polyester based mattress. If this falls within your maximum budget you can rest assured that there is not much more out there that compares.

Origins Pocket 1500

Your bodyweight This will feel
Under 10 Stone / 63kg Medium
10-12 Stone / 63-76kg Medium
12-14 Stone / 76-88kg Medium
14-16 Stone / 88-101kg Medium
16-18 Stone / 101-114kg Soft to Medium
18 Stone / 114kg Plus Please call for advice

The Artisan Naturals is our most popular, unbeatable model with 85% natural fibres. Containing a huge GSM of fillings, including wool and mohair, on a Calico pocket spring unit. This medium feel hand crafted mattress is where we stake our reputation as ‘The Mattress Specialists’.

Artisan Naturals

The mattresses in the Artisan range can be paired with either a soft, medium or a firm spring tension, the correct spring tension is determined by the individuals body weight. In order for me to make some suitable suggestions from our ranges I will first need to know your budget, your preference in comfort and you body weights.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

All of our Pocket sprung mattresses are suitable to be placed on top of a slatted base as long as the gaps between the slats do not exceed 3". If the gaps are larger than 3" we advise that you board over the base using a thin piece of MDF or Plywood to provide the mattress with a uniform surface which will prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping between the slats. This will also make any mattress placed upon it feel slightly firmer. We would not advise placing a Foam based mattress on top of a slatted base because in the same way in which the mattress contours to your body it will also mould around the slats which will damage your mattress and it will not provide you with the correct support.

I hope this information is useful to you, if you have any further questions please give the office a call on 0161 437 4419 to speak to one of our friendly advisors.

Kind regards,
Amy.
