I need to buy a new mattress for my slatted double size bed.
Your article suggests using a duvet to cushion the mattress from the slats. Will this provide enough air flow for the underside of the mattress?
My daughter is asthmatic and needs a slatted bed to prevent dust mites and for ease of keeping the area relatively dust free.
She is also a 'hot' person and fire memory foam too warm. Would a pocket sprung mattress work on the slatted base if there was some cushioning?
She does not want to put boards over the slats.
Hi Janine,
Thank you for your question.
If the gaps between the slats are less than 3 inches (7.6cm) it is not essential to board over the base with mdf or plywood.
If the gaps exceed 3 inches one option is to purchase additional slats from a local hardware store and add these yourself. However please bare in mind that pocket sprung mattresses do perform at their best on a uniform surface. We would never recommend using a slatted base with any type of foam based mattress as the gaps between the slats allow for the mattress to sink in to the gaps.
I hope this helps.
