Boarding over Artisan divan
I have a beautiful Artisan sprung divan from you, but unfortunately the single-sided (Button & Sprung) pocket-spring mattress that we’re currently using on it is not firm enough for us, and needs a solid platform. I have just placed 18mm plywood over the entire 1525x1980 top, and it has helped solve the mattress issue.
I wonder if you could answer a couple of question:
1. Am I permanently damaging the Artisan base with the solid wood top?
2. Are there breathability issues for the mattress by using a solid wood base?
3. If breathability is a problem, would drilling a number of 3-4cm holes in the base solve this?
Many thanks in advance.
Hi Michael,
Thank you for your questions.
Adding a mattress topper to a mattress or using a sprung divan will help to soften the overall feel of a mattress. When a mattress is too soft, a topper will not help in firming up the feel.
Boarding over a sprung divan will definitely help to firm up the overall feel of a mattress. If you create one layer over the entire spring section it helps to even out the pressure meaning less responsiveness from individual springs thus firming up the reaction of the base. This will not damage the base in anyway.
As for breathability Pegboard is a great option, as you have already gone to the trouble of purchasing the MDF you could drill some holes into the board to help with airflow. To protect the mattress from snagging on the MDF or Plywood it may be worth using a cheap or old duvet to cover the the surface before placing the mattress on top. Another way to maintain airflow and ensure everything stays dry and in good condition is to lift the mattress off the base and lift the boarding up to check both the base and the mattress.
Also two tips for maintaining your mattress are firstly, rotate one sided mattresses once a month every month and also always ensure there is adequate ventilation in the room especially when drying clothes on radiators or clothes horses.
I hope this information helps, if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind regards,
Amy.
