Dual tension mattress advice? Can you have two different firmness of bed?

Hi,

We have been sleeping on an orthopaedic foam mattress which is now past its day. I confess to buying a Nectar replacement. I have to admit that I find it very comfortable, it is firmer than most memory foams, but my husband hates it saying it way too soft and swears it has messed with his already very dodgy back.

I wondered about your dual tension mattresses. I'm not sure whether firm or extra firm would be right for him - and whether a medium would be too soft for me. According to your weight table we would be find with a medium but I definitely don't think he and I need the same.

I'm very anxious about making another mistake...

Kind regards,

Hi Paula,

Thanks for your comment on dual tension mattresses.

Dual tension mattresses allow two different weighted sleepers to share the same mattress whilst having the correct spring tension each. A lot of people confuse the mattress comfort feel (ie soft, medium & firm) with the spring tension (which also confusingly are listed as soft medium and firm!) The boxed Nectar mattress is a soft memory foam and people do tend to either love them or hate them. They offer a soft sink which for people with bad backs can be very uncomfortable.

The spring tension needs to be chosen on your bodyweight and then the comfort feel of the mattress is based on the upholstery placed on top of it. You can see more in our video guide below.

However, if you've been used to an Orthopedic mattress these are usually a 1.6 or 1.9 gauge pocket spring. Ie really firm. So you may be fine on a firmer spring, usually, we advise that you don't choose a firmer spring than you need as the bed can feel punishing.

We usually advise getting the firm feel from the upholstery layers. I think we may need to discuss a few more details with you to properly advise. For me to be able to advise on a suitable mattress for you and your husband we would need to know your bodyweight and what your comfort preference is. Have a look at our Artisan 1500 mattress as a starting point though with a firmer feel in the upholstery layer.

We look forward to hearing back from you.

All the best

John & Ryan
