Hi

I'm looking to get a new Superking mattress for our bed and wanted to see if you could perhaps make a recommendation.
You came recommended by some friends who have bought a couple of mattresses. We have stayed over and found them to be very comfortable and though only stayed for a few days are confident that we have slept a lot better while there.

I believe the mattress they have is "Origins Pocket 1500""". The obvious choice would be to get something similar however I wanted to ask your opinion in case there was something you recommend instead.

I often wake up with a sore back on our current mattress. Pain tends to be in the middle of my back. (I have seen the Doctors and while nothing is "wrong" I have pain medication).

Both myself and my girlfriend sleep in the bed.

We both change sleeping position a lot throughout the night. I start on my front and end up on my back often switching from side to side as a way to alleviate my back pain.

Myself 5'11 Currently 105kg - 16.5 Stone (thanks lockdown) however I normally weigh in about 95KG - 14.9 Stone

My Girlfriend...... I could get in some trouble here.

around 5'6 and 70Kg - 11 Stone +-

Hopefully, this is not useless info to you I just wanted to provide all the info I felt may be useful.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated
If you need any more info ill get back to you asap.

Regards
Ross

Hi Ross,

Thanks for getting in touch about a mattress recommendation. We're sorry to hear you have back pain and disturbed sleep. We know first hand what it is like to have a poor nights sleep in discomfort. It tends to build and build into further tiredness and discomfort.

The reason most people fidget and change sleeping positions during the night is discomfort. Ie their current mattress offers either the wrong support or lacks proper upholstery comfort. In the worst cases, both of these elements will be either incorrect or lacking.

There are two parts to choosing a new suitable mattress. Spring tension and then upholstery comfort layers. These will differ depending on your requirements. So let's have a look at how you can make sure you choose the best for both of these areas when buying a new bed.

1.Spring Tension

This is usually the first thing that mattress buyers get wrong. They choose a spring tension thinking it relates to how the bed will feel. This is fundamentally wrong. Spring tensions are based on your bodyweight and height.

For your bodyweights we would recommend a 1.4 spring gauge or medium as it's sometimes referred to. Although you have moved into the firmer 1.6 spring gauge at 16.5 stone, if this is temporary, ie you may lose weight again a medium would be far more suitable in the long term.

The next area to consider is whether you are going to opt for a synthetic spunbond covered pocket spring or a calico encased pocket spring. Calico is more breathable and more progressive in the individual support (as there's less restriction on the springs) but they cost far more. This consideration is more based on budget. For example, our Origins range uses spunbond given the price point whereas the Artisan range primarily use vanadium coated calico encased pocket springs.

2.Mattress Upholstery & Comfort Layers

Comfort layers then need consideration. This is where the true feel of a mattress will come from. If money was no object then natural fibres far out perform synthetic man made fibres. However, they do cost considerably more, like the calico encased pocket spring. The important fact is choosing a mattress that has a significant GSM of fibres on top of that spring unit. This is what gives the comfort and helps reduce discomfort thus fidgeting during the night.

You need to be looking for at least 1000gsm in a mattress for the upholstery to be significant enough for lasting comfort.

If you're a back sleeper you need a slightly firmer feel in the upholstery layer. Whereas a side sleeper needs slightly more forgiving upholstery.

Origins Pocket 1500

The mattress you've already experienced would be ideal. Its a 1.4 gauge pocket spring and has 1550GSM of upholstery fillings.

Origins Pocket 1500 Mattress
1 300GSM WOOL
2 750GSM VERY SOFT POLYESTER
3 500GSM POLYESTER PAD
4 ONE INCH FOAM INSULATOR LAYER
5 1500 SPUN BOND POCKET SPRINGS
TOTAL 1550GSM
DEPTH 30-33CM

If you're wanting a natural fibre mattress equivalent then also have a look at our Artisan Naturals model. Available in a medium spring tension too but with a higher GSM and including 85% natural fibre fillings.

Artisan Naturals Mattress
1 1200GSM BLENDED BRITISH FLEECE WOOL AND COTTON
2 HAIRPROOF CAMBRIC COVER
3 1250GSM REBOUND POLY COTTON
4 1500GSM 100% PURE MOHAIR
5 1600 CALICO ENCASED POCKET SPRINGS [49MM ] [1.28MM ]
TOTAL: 3950GSM
DEPTH: 27-30CM
CHEMICAL FREE COVER

Lastly, if you're considering a super king sized mattress it is worthwhile thinking about a zip and link model. Which are two separate sides zipped together below the join. This practically eliminates roll together and transference, especially in a quality pocket spring mattress. It also means that the mattress is far easier to turn and offers more support over its lifetime for sleepers as there is an extra row of perimeter support springs where the mattresses join together compared to a one piece. Sometimes if the centre of a one-piece super kingsize isn't slept on it can settle at a slower rate than the rest of the mattress Just like if you didn't sit on one side of your sofa it would be plumper than the used side. Just food for thought.
