Louise

Hello,

I have fibromyalgia and need some mattress advice. I have insomnia due to pain, restless legs and pressure points, and I'm a super hot sleeper!

I always sleep on my own (partner has his own room due to all my restless nonsense), and am 62 kilos.

Any thoughts on a mattress or topper?

Thank you so much.

Hi Louise,

Thanks for getting in touch for mattress advice. Sorry to hear you're struggling so much during the night. We have helped a number of fibromyalgia sufferers to sleep better over the years and are happy to provide some bed guidance.

More often than not restless legs, pain and fibromyalgia go hand in hand in the bedroom. An unsuitable mattress can take these conditions and exacerbate them during what should be a restful period. It saddens us to hear of many fibromyalgia sufferers being advised to choose a super supportive or firm mattress as a cure. This is really poor advice.

The top 3 tips for people with fibromyalgia when buying a mattress are:

  1. Choose a more forgiving comfort layer (avoid all super firm upholstery)
  2. Opt for natural breathable fibres to keep your bodyweight better regulated
  3. Select the right pocket spring support for your body weight.

What many sufferers from fibromyalgia require is a far more forgiving and often more breathable mattress. This is because a breathable mattress stops heat build-up which can lead to joints and pressure points feeling even more uncomfortable. As you're already struggling with pain and joint pressure a firm mattress or overly supportive comfort layer simply makes this worse.

Lastly, the pocket spring tension should be selected entirely on your bodyweight, not on the feel you want from the mattress. In fact, these pocket sprung mattress units are made for weight ranges, not 'comfort feels'. It's the upholstery layers on top that provide the comfort of the mattress.

Best Mattress for a Hot Fibromyalgia Sleeper:

Natural fibres are the best choice for any hot sleeper but especially those with pain conditions. This is because they can help keep you and your joints cooler in bed. Natura fibres retain far less heat than synthetic foams and polyester. They also have a far longer lifespan too when looked after. Often far outliving their synthetic counterparts. When joined with a high-end calico encased pocket spring they become the coolest mattresses around.

Don't be tempted by mattress 'cool-gels/foams/covers'. These do little to remove heat and are often placed in to try and combat the dreaded heat from memory foam which with your requirements must avoid at all costs.

The best option for you would be the Artisan Bespoke 004 - a 100% Natural Fibre mattress with a Calcio vanadium coated pocket spring. It has a medium feel in the natural upholstery with a forgiving top layer. Great for pressure points. The 1600 individual pocket springs allow restless sleepers to move quickly, easily and effortlessly. Often this helps reduce the amount of fidgeting when coupled with the progressive comfort layers of this mattress. We would recommend this in a 1.4 medium gauge tension for your bodyweight.
