We are looking to purchase a new mattress and are keen to avoid animal products. We have a 4’6” double-sized mattress.

Can you advice please on the best animal-free mattress?

Hi Judith,

Thanks for getting in touch asking for mattress advice. There are a number of people looking for animal-free mattresses and upholstery that doesn't feature animal hair or wool.

We have a number of animal-free mattresses which may be suitable for you.

Without knowing your body weight, sleeping position and comfort preference it does make it tricky to give a solid recommendation. However, we can provide some advice to get you started and you can always get back in touch with more detail to help us tailor our recommendation for the very best mattress for your requirements.

The first thing to bear in mind when buying any new mattress is the support and spring tension. You need to know the spring gauge of the pocket springs to and then choose the correct tension based on your bodyweight. Pocket springs are made for weight ranges as shown below.

Spring Tension Wire diameter (Gauge) Weight Range
Soft 1.2mm Bespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium 1.4mm Upto 16 stone
Firm 1.6mm 16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic 1.9mm 20 stone plus

The next step is to identify the comfort layers and upholstery that sit on top of this spring layer. These layers will give the overall feel of the mattress, whether you prefer soft, medium or a firmer feel mattress.

Best Animal Free Mattresses:
More and more people are looking for animal free mattresses whether due to lifestyle choices or a need to avoid them due to allergies. You have two choices when it comes to animal free mattress fibres.

  1. Plant based natural fibres
  2. Synthetic man made fibres

Plant-based fibres feature breathable and resilient layers that compete just as effectively with more traditional animal fibres such as wool and horsehair. They are long-lasting and breathable. In fact, you've be amazed at just how comfortable plant fibres are in blind tests against animal fibres. You can't tell the difference.

Synthetic fibres are man-made and usually feature polyester 'white' fibres or foams. They are less breathable but at an entry-level price point.

The most important part is to make sure that whichever mattress you choose has enough fibres for lasting comfort and tailored spring tension. All of the mattresses below meet this requirement so please take a look to see which meets your requirements and price point best before seeking further advice from us.
