Hi there we purchased a bespoke mattress last year from Bensons for beds after a month or two and doing exactly what we needed to do as in turning etc there was a lot of sagging !

Bensons sent independent co to inspect it failed all tests and we were given a replacement with lots of emails calls and aggravation in between! The new mattress arrived last Monday great nights sleep first night since then sagging has returned I can actually feel the tufted buttons digging into me and can’t sleep!! Bensons sending out independent co to inspect again they now saying out slats on bed are slightly too wide apart we have very sturdy large bedstead that takes two men to move could this really be the problem after one nights sleep?

Would love to hear your thoughts on this it’s all been a bit of a nightmare! Thank you in advance

Hi Jill,

Thanks for getting in touch and we're so sorry to hear you're having such issues with your Bensons for Beds mattress. It's never nice when you buy a new mattress and then find out that it's defective or sagging unduly.

Usually, these are rare instances where there's been a manufacturing defect, such as a upholstery layer missing or the wrong spring-type placed inside. Which sometimes does happen occasionally with such mass-produced mattresses.

It's hard to say what's causing your Bensons mattress to sag so much so quickly, especially twice. Without knowing which exact model you've had its hard to provide an exact breakdown. However, we do know the range well and have dealt with people complaining about settlement with Bensons for beds in the past.

Bensons Bespoke Pillowtop Issues

If you've chosen any of the following Bensons for beds models it may be the dreaded pillowtop that's causing the excess settlement issues.

  • Bensons Bespoke Pure Tranquility
  • Bensons Bespoke Pure Serenity

The issue with these pillow tops is that they provide a single point of failure in a mattress.

Pillow top mattresses have become increasingly popular in the past few years, It is likely that you are seeing them advertised everywhere if you are searching for a new mattress. If your Bensons model is a Pillow top mattresses then it maybe this thats causing the issue.

Pillow Top Failings

Pillow top mattresses cannot be flipped. This makes all Bensons Pillowtop mattresses single sided mattress. Single sided mattresses still require rotation although they do not need turning. Single-sided pillow top mattresses are well known for creating indentations. The biggest downfall is once this happens there is no way to resolve the problem because you cannot remove that top layer in the same way you could with a mattress topper, so essentially when that top layer loses its shape your whole mattress is done for, hence why the life expectancy is so much shorter. In your cases a few months!

Spaces between slats

You do need to make sure that any spaces between slatted based are less than 2 inches as these can cause the mattress to sag and conform between the gaps. Bensons should have really advised you about this as well. If I were you I'd board over the base with some ply or MDF to stop this from happening. You can read more on that here Jill.

Our advice would b to get back in touch with Bensons to see if you can exchange to a more suitable mattress - without the dreaded pillowtop.

Good luck with your mission. You can contact Bensons for Beds if you need to raise a defect on 0333 222 6800.

We hope that helps and gives you further mattress buying guidance. If you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.

Sleep well
John & Ryan
