The best mattress for someone who struggles to lift the bed to turn it

I have been struggling for some time with putting the sheets on my double bed as I have arthritis in both my hands and my knees. I have to lift each corner of the mattress and hold it up with a knee while I put the corner of the sheet on, and this is painful. I have been thinking, when I move, that I should buy a single bed as the mattress would be lighter to lift, but I'm not too sure about this as I often migrate to the middle of my double bed or find I'm lying diagonally when I wake up. So I'm now thinking maybe I should get a small double but that makes it heavier to bigger sheets to wash and dry?
I have sprung slats on the bed I have now but have read that a sprung divan base makes the mattress feel softer. I am now thinking of getting a sprung divan base and a soft sprung mattress.
The only mattress I have been able to find that actually says it's soft and not soft/medium is a Vispring and I have been thinking about getting one of those. However, I don't know what the weight difference is between a sprung mattress and the one I have now, which is an original Emma. The Emma mattress is a lot lighter than my old mattress but not as soft as I was hoping it would be. I didn't want a firm edge as there wouldn't be so much soft space on which to sleep, which I think would be more important if I were to buy a single size. I am 77 and weigh 8st soaking wet.

Thanks for your question about the lightest mattress to enable you to fit your bedsheets. We're sorry to hear you're struggling with finding a soft enough mattress that you can easily lift. We can appreciate this is a real pain.
You have two real options:
The problem with choosing a lighter mattress is that you're going to have to look for a more synthetic lighter weight mattress, Fibres. This will make the mattress easier to move and shift but does mean that you're going to be stuck with an entry-level mattress rather than a heavier high-end model such as Vispring or our Artisan range.
We will give you advice for both so you can decide.
Lighter Mattresses Advice:
In terms of the weight, you’re going to run into a struggle if you’re looking for a lightweight mattress whilst also looking for a high natural fibre model. The reason for this is that any well made quality natural fibre mattress will be much heavier than a cheaper polyester or foam-filled counterpart. You can see the weights of our mattresses here but you’re looking at around 35kg for a single bed or 52kg for a double depending on the volume of fillings.
The Emma mattress will be a lot lighter than a Vispring, Savoir or John Ryan mattress as the Emma bed is 100% synthetic and uses man-made foams as their primary filling. It is also only a one sided mattress which makes lifting easier but does mean you're stuck with only having half of the mattress you can use.
Even if you only turn your bed every few months doing so will make it last far longer and help avoid settlement or dips from occurring. We get a lot of complaints about this with Emma and other memory foam beds.
What's the best Single Soft Mattress?

Does a firm edge limit the space you can sleep on?
it's also worthwhile pointing out what a firm edge is that you see in higher-end mattresses. A firm edge is where a single row of firmer springs is used around the very perimeter of a mattress. This is used to help give edge support and rigidity. Without this, a lot of cheaper mattresses suffer from roll-off.
However, we wouldn't worry too much as it is only the first inch of the edge that has this. Very few people could sleep on the very edge without rolling themselves out of bed at night.
Are sprung divans softer than sprung slats?
A sprung divan will feel softer than a sprung slatted base as the sprung divan features a row of pocket springs - a bit like a mattress for your mattress if you will. This sprung base helps give an overall softer feel to any mattress. Sprung slats are one of the firmest of mattress bases with very little give so its worthwhile bearing this in mind.
