Limiting motion transference and heat retention

The movements caused by way of my girlfriend turning, and generally fidgeting, whilst sleeping often causes me to wake up early and unable to get back to sleep. This has led me to investigating solutions.
Thankfully, the duvet, whilst probably of good quality, is rather old and therefore needs replacing - it's just over 20 years old!
I understand that memory foam is best for motion isolation, but I'm concerned as to the heat retention issue associated with such mattress types.
I've therefore decided on buying a king size zip & link mattress, probably using pocket sprung mattresses rather than memory foam.
Is there likely to be much difference between the motion transference in a zip & link pocket sprung set up and in a zip & link memory foam set up?
Lastly, I understand that mattress toppers on the market can be made of various materials, but that yours are made of memory foam or similar. Could such a mattress topper on top of zip & link pocket sprung mattresses still lead to heat retention issues? And why do you not make other types of toppers made of these other materials?
Thanks in advance, David

Hi again David,

We do not recommend memory foam specifically because of the heat retention qualities of that product. Whilst memory foam can isolate transference it also leads to sleepers getting stuck in a rut during the night. This is because memory foam is incredibly slow to respond so if you need to move during the night you can struggle. This, in turn, can lead to waking up during the night to be able to move out of the warm crater left in the foam.

Our toppers are made of either Latex or Hybrid foam, which are similar to memory foam in their body moulding properties but without the heat-retaining qualities.

Before purchasing a topper, you should try a new mattress for at least 14 days before deciding upon whether to purchase one, as it may turn out to be an unnecessary expense.

Pocket sprung mattresses are great for reducing the disturbance as a result of one party moving during the night and zip and link mattresses are even more so. I note from your later comment that you and your girlfriend have a 6.5st weight differential and under normal circumstances, I would recommend a split tension, soft for your girlfriend and medium for you. If you opt for a medium tension in both mattresses, the application of a topper will assist in softening the feel for your girlfriend. The table below will help identify what exact spring tensions each of you may require.

Spring Tension Wire diameter (Gauge) Weight Range
Soft 1.2mm Bespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium 1.4mm Upto 16 stone
Firm 1.6mm 16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic 1.9mm 20 stone plus

I trust that this is of assistance to you, but if you have any further queries, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards Gary
