Question on firmness for joint issues.
My partner and I are looking for a new mattress as existing one is sagging in the middle. We tried out a few in the bed shop yesterday and he liked the Kaymed Signature Response 2500. I thought it may be a bit too much to spend, and anyway, for myself the topper seemed a little too thick, and therefore a little too soft, even though the sales guy said it was a firm mattress. He likes a medium firm bed, and I normally like a firm mattress, but for the last year have suffered from increased joint and muscle pain. (due to chronic fatigue but hopefully will get better) so I'm finding it very difficult to get a good nights sleep, and I have to move about a lot in bed to relieve pain. Looking through your website it seems that going for 2500 springs is a bit much, considering partner is 11.5 stones and I'm 12 stones at moment, so one with 1200 springs or so should be adequate? The other consideration is that 2 years ago I was under 10 stone, the weight gain due partly to medication and partly underactivity. I'm hoping in time as I recover and am more active I will get back down to my ideal weight which would be just over 10 stone. I'd really like your advice on best firmness for us both, and also best topper for a mattress that will help with my sore joints.
Thanks
Jacqueline
Hi Jacqueline,
Thank you for your enquiry. We're sorry to hear you're struggling so much, we have written a really detailed article on mattresses for people with chronic fatigue syndrome and ME here which maybe helpful.
Before dealing with your question on firmness, we would like to address the issue of your mattress sagging in the middle. This may be as a result of the base upon which the mattress sits. If it is a slatted base, either flat or sprung, such bases tend to have a central support bar, which can cause dipping or bulging in the area where the bar is under the mattress. This can be resolved by placing a barrier over the slats such as thin (3-5mm)MDF, which will provide a uniform surface upon which the mattress will sit and prevent the dip or bulge occurring.
With your particular body weights, and even when you do reduce to 10 stones, we would recommend a medium spring tension/feel mattress. A firm mattress will not suit and is likely to cause further aggravation to your condition and in particular the joint and muscle pain. If you have to move during the night to relieve your pain, individually encased pocket spring will reduce any disturbance felt by your partner. As far as the number of pocket spring are concerned, 1000 in a standard king size are sufficient to provide support for people of average body weights, such as yours.
Having viewed the details of the mattress you mention, we note that it is described as a medium feel mattress and not firm as suggested by the sales person. In addition, it is one sided and a pillow top, both of these characteristics will have a detrimental affect on the longevity of the mattress. We do not have any products which are similar in construction to the Kaymed product and because they use some patented components, we cannot replicate this.
Please view the Origins Pocket 1500, which has a standard medium tension spring unit together with man made upholstery providing an overall medium feel. Alternatively, if your budget permits, please view the Artisan Naturals or Artisan Bespoke 004, both of which can have the spring tension selected to suit and both have natural upholstery layers. The Naturals has 85% natural upholstery whereas the 004 has 100%, but both will provide the same overall feel.
As far as a topper is concerned, we would advocate that you wait until you have had your mattress for at least 21-28 days as it can take that long for your body to get used to the feel and if you buy a topper at the outset, it may turn out to be an unnecessary expense.
We trust that the above is of help to you, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419 and speak with one of our advisors.
Kind regards Julie
