Memory foam or pocket sprung?
I'm 10.5 stone and a side sleeper. My current mattress is a medium pocket sprung with memory foam topper. After about 5 years, I started getting lower back pain. Moving to different parts of the bed helps, but after a week or so I get uncomfortable again, as the memory foam is too saggy. My back tends to do better on a firm mattress, but then I get sore hips!! I ended up ordering a medium pocket sprung mattress with memory foam from a shop today, as was assured that the technology has improved. However, I've seen some online reviews suggesting that I may end up with the same problem. I'm thinking of phoning the store tomorrow to change it to a more expensive medium firm pocket sprung, 1600 coils, no foam. It felt ok in the shop, but I was nervous about my hips. If I get it and my hips struggle, would a topper solve the problem?
Hi Catherine,
Thank you for your enquiry.
With your particular body weight a medium spring tension mattress is right. As a side sleeper, in addition to the medium spring you need to opt for softer upholstery layers. Unfortunately, whilst initially, memory foam does give a soft feel, it ultimately turns to lack support and also produces heat. Firm mattresses may initially feel comfortable, but will result in the aching hips you refer to. Do not opt for a medium/firm feel mattress as these are not suited to side sleepers.
Please view the Origins Comfort 1000, which has a standard medium tension spring unit together with layers of soft man made upholstery, ideal for side sleepers. If you prefer natural upholstery, please view the Artisan Luxury, which can have the spring tension selected to suit and has the softest natural upholstery layer sin the range, again ideal for side sleepers.
We note that you are suggesting going for a mattress with 1600 coils, this is not a pocket sprung product, but sounds like a bonnel coil product, which is one continuous piece of wire coiled into 1600 spring and does not provide the same level of support and comfort that pocket springs do.
We trust that the above helps, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419 and speak with one of our advisors.
Kind regards.
