Firm mattress giving me backache

Hi,
We recently bought firm Hovag mattress from Ikea. This was to replace a sagging Sealy mattress we'd had for about 7 years but in hindsight I'd have back in an instant as it was still a lot more comfortable than this instrument of torture! I'd been getting some lumbar tension on the old mattress so I thought it would make sense to go firm on the new one but that was clearly the wrong decision as it's horrible. First couple of months we're bearable and I assumed I was just getting used to it, but the discomfort has ramped up each night to the point that I can't stay asleep for more than an hour on it, constantly have to change positions and crawl out of the bed in the morning knackered! Annoyingly we're now out of the ikea money back guarantee. Anyway... I really want to get it right this time and not waste any more money. I'm 13.5 stone, my wife is around 9 stone. We both generally sleep on our sides, part of the reason this mattress is so uncomfortable I guess as it has no give for hips and shoulders meaning lower back has to slump. Bed is wood with slatted base, not sprung. Please advise which mattress you think would be suitable.
Btw - I know it says 30 days delivery but is it usually quicker?
Many thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,

Thank you for your enquiry.

It is a common misconception that if you have back issues you need to opt for a firm spring tension/feel mattress. This is in fact incorrect, what is required is the correct spring tension to provide support for the specific body weights with comfort being provided by the upholstery. With your particular body weights we would have advised that you seek a medium spring tension/feel mattress for support and because you are side sleepers, you will require softer upholstery.

Please view the Origins Comfort 1000, which has a standard medium tension spring unit together with soft leyels of man made upholstery, ideal for side sleepers.

1 750gsm Very Soft Polyester
2 500gsm Polyester Pad
3 One Inch Foam Insulator Layer
4 1000 Spun Bond Pocket Springs

Alternatively, if you prefer natural upholstery, please view the Artisan Luxury, which can have the spring tension selected to suit and has the softest upholstery in all our ranges.

John Ryan By Design Artisan Luxury Vi-Spring Devonshire
1 1200 GSM British Fleece Wool and Cotton 600gsm British Fleece Wool
2 Hairproof Cambric Cover 1700gsm Devonshire Fleece Wool
3 1200gsm Pure Horsehair NA
4 500gsm Pure Wool NA
5 1200gsm Pure Horsetail NA
6 500gsm Pure Wool 300gsm Bonded British Fleece Wool and Cotton
7 1476 Calico encased Pocket Springs [51mm] [1.42mm] 1326 Calico encased Pocket Springs [54mm] [1.52mm]
Total GSM 4600gsm 2600gsm

If you intend to retainn your current slatted base, we would advocate placing a barrier, usually thin (3-5mm) MDF over the slats to provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats.

As far as delivery is concerned, the 30 day is standard, however, if you were to select a product from our outlet, the delivery time could be reduced.

We trust that the above helps, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419 and speak with one of our advisors.

Kind regards,
Amy.
