Expensive mattress failure

Comment Check Icon 1 answers Comment Icon 0 comments

My current mattress is very uncomfortable because it has dips where we sleep and a lump in the middle. I cannot sleep through the night and get pins and needles in my arms.
The mattress is: John Lewis & Partners Natural Collection Swaledale Wool 11400, Medium Tension Pocket Spring Mattress King size (on a wood slatted base). John Lewis has removed the description from their website.

It was described as seasonal sided with a warm and a cool side and only to be turned for summer or winter. I was attracted to this because of the effort of turning. I weigh 10 stone and my husband 14.5 stone, and we are in our fifties.

After 18 months, I complained about the fault but despite a long guarantee, they decided that there was no fault after sending an \”unbiased\” inspector. This process took a long time. It was gutting, as a regular long term customer, to find that the John Lewis guarantee was worthless, and to be stuck with sleepless nights.

I need to replace the defective mattress but I\’m concerned about this happening again –
I\’ve read other customers\’ similar experiences, is this a common problem with contemporary mattresses? How can I avoid such a costly situation again? Thank you for any advice.

Hi WilRB,

Thank you for your question. The upholstery layers of all new mattresses are compacted during manufacture and will feel firmer than described. It takes the customer sleeping and moving around to soften the upholstery layers to their described level of comfort. As we are creatures of habit we tend to sleep in the one position which means the upholstery layers soften when you sleep but this leaves the surrounding upholstery like new. Larger sizes such as kingsize and super kingsize seem to develop a ridge in the middle. This happens when no one sleeps or uses the middle of the mattress. This area is not raised it just hasn't settled as much as where you lie the most.

Regularly turning the mattress can help to even out the settlement of the upholstery layers. Please find below the article from the National Bed Federation regarding the settlement of upholstery layers.

The John Lewis Natural Collection Swaldale 11400 has a medium level in the wool, hemp and flax upholstery layers. Given the pins and needles you are experiencing I am assuming you are a side sleeper and as such require a softer level of comfort. Adding a soft mattress topper can provide additional comfort and prolong the lifespan of your mattress. As your mattress is a natural fibre mattress I would recommend a natural fibre mattress topper so that you do not lose the benefits of the breathable fibres. The thicker the mattress topper the softer the mattress will feel.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
