Issues with latex mattress and lack of support
We have had a fairly expensive latex mattress for approximately a year and we have found the support it provides has deteriorated from about 6 months onwards. Now we are waking up aching several times in the night and really struggling to get a good sleep.
The area we normally sleep in feels like it is much softer and we sink into the mattress, other areas such as the middle of the bed are very firm in comparison. Inspecting the mattress there are no visible dips
We are both side sleepers, approx 70kg and have rotated the mattress every month. Our bed has a good base meeting manufacture guidelines. The mattress spec is 5cm Talalay, 18cm Dunlop.
The mattress manufacturer has sent an inspector to look at the mattress and they deemed some settling but within tolerance and no manufacturing defects.
Is there anything we can do to fix this like a topper or do we need to discard the mattress and buy a new one? We don't really want to do this as it was very expensive and seems like a waste. Or are we just not suited to a latex mattress?
Hi Simon,
Thank you for placing your question regarding your Latex mattress and lack of support from that mattress.
First and foremost, with any mattress we always advise our customers to ensure that they utilise the middle part of the mattress. As we are creatures of habit and tend to sleep on our own sides each night, the middle part of the mattress is rarely used which then makes the sleeping sides look as though they have dipped. This is not the case, it is just that the middle part of the mattress has not been allowed to settle alongside those sleeping areas.
Latex is a premium solid core mattress material which offers superior comfort and durability when compared to memory Foam and other mattress foams and is incredibly durable. Latex is also less heat retentive than memory foam mattresses.
Our advice would be to try and utilise the middle part of your mattress to enable even settlement. This could be done when one of you are having a lie in or reading the paper or a book etc and then also to add a latex mattress topper which should also then help to even out the surface area.
We recommend that all one sided mattresses should have a topper as this helps to increase the notoriously short life span of no-turn mattresses. For two-sided mattress models having a topper is really more subjective based on comfort, especially if you want to soften the mattress.
The best mattress toppers should be:
- At least 5cm deep or more
- Two-sided/fully turnable
- Tape edged to increase perimeter support
- Be based on a breathable natural fibre ie: Latex.
We do make a 5cm natural latex topper which provides a medium level of comfort and is 100% natural. However if you required a latex topper which is made of a softer density latex then you could contact a Company called Latex Sense who make differing densities of latex and you can contact that Company for further advice on this.
I hope this assists however should you require further information or advice, please do not hesitate to contact us.
