As a bad-back sufferer, should I opt for all-pocket springs or a mix of all-pocket and mini-pocket?
Female, 8 st, aged 81, osteoporosis/probably arthritis, feel I need firm mattress but with a bit of softness on top. Can't decide whether Rest Assured Arden (all-pocket but informed it's very firm) or Rest Assured Redford (all-pocket plus mini-springs but felt a bit too dippy). Yours is a helpful website!
Hi Estelle,
Thank you for your question. The advice used to be that anyone with back problems needed a firm mattress, but this is not the case. The correct level of support for your height and body weight is essential, and the upholstery layers should be based on your sleep positions and comfort preferences. At your very light body weight, the medium spring tension will provide you with plenty of support.
| Bodyweight | Spring tension |
|---|---|
| Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
| 16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
| Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
The Rest Assured Arden mattress is described as extra firm or orthopedic. You do not weigh enough to activate these springs, you need to be at least 20 stone. If the springs are not active and moving with you, they are not active and not providing support. You essentially have a tabletop of wire with some upholstery layers on top.
The Rest Assured Redford mattress is described as an overall medium level of comfort, which is suitable for all sleep positions, not too firm for side sleepers nor too soft for front and back sleepers.
As you found this a bit 'dippy', I would recommend a firmer medium level of comfort such as the Origins Reflex 1000 or the Artisan 1500 with the correct level of support. At your light body weight, these would feel quite firm.
We do not recommend micro HD springs as they do not offer anything in support but do take up space where more luxurious upholstery layers could be. It is these comfort layers that determine how the mattress feels.
I hope this helps, and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
