Hi Clive,

Thank you for contacting us regarding our Artisan mattresses.

Our Artisan mattresses are hand made in Yorkshire and contain premium pocket springs, are hand side stitched and are jam packed with natural fibres.

When looking at the Relyon Eltham mattress, unfortunately the description of the mattress does not tell me exactly what is contained therein such as the GSM of the fibres used.   The GSM relates to the upholstery layers and is a good indication as to the quality of the mattress.  According to the description this is described as a medium level of comfort.

  • Relyon's Royal Eltham Pocket 1400 contains sumptuous natural layers working alongside individual pocket springs to provide you with exceptional support and comfort. Available in a choice of soft, medium and firm tensions, you are sure to find the right mattress for you.
  • Available in?Soft,?Medium?or?Firm?Tension
  • 1400 Pocket Springs - The pocket spring system is the best at providing individual support to the sleeper. The upper part of the spring shapes to the body contours while the lower part absorbs changes in weight distribution for the ultimate in comfort and support. As a rule of thumb the higher the number of individual springs, the more support will be provided to the sleeper. The springs work independently to avoid roll together.
  • Hand-Nested and Hand-Centre-Tied Springs - The individual springs sewn in fabric pockets are hand-nested in a honeycomb pattern and tied with linen cord. This construction eliminates movement transfer for a more peaceful sleep.
  • Cashmere and Silk Blended Layer - A blend of cashmere and silk are added to the mattress to provide levels of exquisite comfort. Cashmere is historically regarded as the softest natural hair. Silk is luxuriously soft yet very strong and absorbent, making silk excellent for temperature regulation. The finest silk fibres are blended into a durable insulation layer inside the mattress, providing a sumptuous and supportive feel.
  • Cotton Layer - A cotton layer with responsive properties that complement the spring unit is added to the mattress to help provide a comfortable feel and enhances breathability.
  • Lamb?s Wool - Lamb?s wool is used in this mattress as a soft and insulating upholstery layer for added comfort. Lamb?s wool is a natural insulator providing coolness in the summer and warmth in the winter. Offering superb comfort, it also has hygroscopic properties encouraging the evaporation of body moisture.
  • Cotton Layer - Generous cotton layers with responsive properties that complement the spring unit are added to the mattress to help provide a comfortable feel. It is a soft breathable fibre, which helps to keep heat away from your body.
  • Hypo-Allergenic Layer - A layer of hypo-allergenic fibre is used underneath the mattress fabric cover. This layer is sterilised and dust-free, therefore ideal for allergy sufferers.
  • M-Pure Treated Cover - A pure and natural fire retardant is used on the cover, which is 100% sustainable, biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Instead of using the traditional chemical-based retardant, M-Pure uses natural Bio based ingredients instead, giving you a fresh and hygienic sleeping surface.
  • Mattress Cover - 100% Viscose.
  • Hand-Tufted - The traditional method of mattress upholstery where the fillings are secured by hand with tufts from the top of the mattress to the bottom to ensure all loose fillings are secured to provide the perfect finish.
  • 2 Rows of Hand Side Stitching - Traditional hand-side stitching which secures the outer springs to the border at the top and bottom preventing roll-out and is the most highly skilled and labour intensive of all the operations. Side-stitching is carried out by senior upholsterers using traditional long needles and twine to make borders and edges stronger. The effects on the mattress are quite dramatic preventing the springs from distorting and extending the sleeping area right up to the edge of the bed to make the borders and edges stronger.
  • Flag-stitched Handles - Handles on both sides for ease of positioning.
  • Double-Sided Mattress - Turn over and rotate your mattress once a week for the first 3 months and then once a month thereafter to help the fillings settle evenly

This mattress can be made with either a soft, medium or firm spring tension.   The tension relates to the internal spring unit and with our mattresses, this is based on body weights and heights.   At your body weights, we would recommend a medium spring tension for support as you are both too light for a firm spring.   We would not recommend a firm spring tension unless the body weights are over 17.5st and the reason for this is that in order to create the support, you need to make a slight impression into those springs in order for them to move when you move individually.  You would not be able to move a firm spring tension so it would be like lying on a table top of wire.   We would advise a medium spring tension for you both and if you require a firm mattress, the firmness should come from the upholstery fillings which are on top of the spring unit.

    Bodyweight Spring tension
    Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
    16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The firmest mattress which we make from a comfort point of view, is the Artisan Bespoke which contains 100% natural fibres on top of 1600 calico encased pocket springs.

If you are used to a firmer level of comfort then the Artisan Bespoke would be fine for you however side sleepers do require cushioning for shoulders and hips otherwise if the upholstery layers are too firm, this can cause pressure pain in those areas.

Natural fibres create the coolest sleeping surfaces so you should not overheat on our mattress.

Our Artisan mattresses have a firmer spring around the outside edge of the mattress to prevent that feeling of rolling off the mattress and for added side support.

With regard to our bases, the Artisan range of mattresses have been made to go onto a sprung divan base which cushions the mattress and does not affect the overall feel of the mattress.   They can go onto either a platform topped base or a slatted base however this will firm the internal support up slightly.   Our bases can be made in a wide range of fabrics which can be viewed on our website or we can arrange to have a fabric book posted to you so that you can view the fabrics in terms of colour and texture.
