  1. I have a bad back and hips. I've found when sleeping in slatted base on holiday my backs not so bad. I have a mammoth mattress, not that old and a sprung edge drawer base, again not very old . I find I use my feet side to side motion to roll over at home, but not when away.do you think I should change my basevtoca slatted or change my mattress? Or both!

Hi Kathryn,

Thank you for your question. Without knowing which Mammoth mattress you have, it would not be possible to say if your mattress is right for you or not. The advice used to be that anyone with back issues needed a firmer mattress, but this is not the case. You require a mattress that will provide the correct level of support for your height and body weight and the comfort layers (how the mattress feels) is determined by your sleep positions and comfort preferences. We wouldn't pair anyone with a firm mattress if they are a side sleeper, as this can cause pressure pains in the shoulders and hips or you can pivot on these areas, which puts pressure on your lower spine.

Example of MDF complete slatted base boarding

A pocket sprung base cushions a mattress, providing a softer overall feel. When we sold our Fusion 100% natural latex range of mattresses, we paired them with a platform base. When you put a foam-type mattress onto a pocket sprung base, it creates a lot of movement within the mattress. Instead of replacing your base, you can place MDF or Plywood on your pocket sprung base, which will stabilise your mattress. To figure out if this would be beneficial, you could try the mattress on the floor for a week or two. If you find that this is more suitable for you, boarding over your base will help. If this doesn't help, this will tell you that your current mattress is not suitable for you.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact our small friendly team on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
