What mattress to choose Origins Pocket 1500 or Origins Reflex 1000

Hi, I'm looking for a new mattress for an ottoman base. I was looking at the Origins mattress but wasn't sure whether to go for the 1500 or 1000? We just tried the Simba Hybrid and I found it far too hard. I woke up with aches and pains every day and kept waking in the night because I was uncomfortable. I'm a side sleeper and my partner sleeps on his back and side. I'm around 9 stone and just over 5 foot and he's about 12 stone and about 5 foot 7. He's previously had back pain. Can you help? Thanks,

Hi Di,

Thank you for reaching out to us about your new mattress!

When selecting the right mattress, it’s essential to find the perfect balance of support and comfort. The internal spring unit provides the necessary support, while the upholstery fillings on top enhance your comfort for a restful night's sleep.

When it comes to support, it's important to consider your body weight and height, as these factors determine how your body interacts with the mattress. To ensure optimal support, your body should create a slight impression in the spring unit. Given your specific weights and heights, both of you would benefit from medium spring tension, which is the ideal choice regardless of which of our mattresses you choose.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Comfort is primarily determined by the upholstery fillings, which are influenced by your sleeping positions. For side sleepers and back sleepers, it’s essential to have adequate cushioning for the shoulders and hips, while also ensuring that the spine remains aligned when sleeping on the back. With this in mind, I would recommend a medium level of comfort.

The Simba Hybrid mattress features memory foam, which offers a firmer feel. This could be a reason why you might not be experiencing the comfortable night's sleep you desire. Additionally, memory foam is known to retain heat, as it relies on your body warmth to allow for the sinkage into its top layers.

The Origins Pocket 1500 offers a balanced level of comfort and support, making it suitable for both of you. In contrast, the Origins Reflex 1000 is designed to be firmer, which may not provide the necessary cushioning for your shoulders, hips, and knees.

The Origins Range of mattresses are traditional tufted which have a totally different sleeping sensation to that of memory foam in that you will lie on a traditional tufted mattress, not sink into them and they do not have a molding sensation.   If you have not slept on a traditional pocket sprung mattress, the only other mattress that we make which has a flat sleeping surface would be the Origins Pocket Latex 1500 which contains two layers of talalay latex on top of 1500 pocket springs however this mattress would feel a lot firmer for you as you are quite light in body weight.

Given that you have an ottoman base, it’s essential to check its weight capacity, as our mattresses can be quite substantial; for example, a kingsize mattress typically weighs around 55kg. If your base features slats, make sure the distance between them does not exceed 7.5cm. Larger gaps may allow the mattress to sag, compromising its support. If the slat gaps are 7.5cm or smaller, we recommend placing a barrier, such as an old duvet or blanket, over the slats to protect the underside of the mattress. If your base is a platform style, it will adequately support the mattress without any concerns.

I hope this assists however if you do require further information or advice, please do not hesitate to contact us.   You can telephone the Office and speak with one of our friendly team on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards
Julie
