Avoiding the kings ridge

Comment Check Icon 1 answers Comment Icon 0 comments

We have a super king divan bed. The mattress was from a well known company about 4 years ago. Within a year it developed an ugly ridge, today, it’s unbearable!

I am 10 stone, side and back sleeper, my husband is 14/15 stone, back and front sleeper.
I’ve read that a zip lock is better for bigger beds?

I rotated this mattress according to manufacture instructions, however, the middle of the bed, is still the middle, so this did nothing for the ridge.

From what I read, some companies will say, no ridge will appear if you follow instructions and some say a mattress will eventually sink to your body

how on earth do hotels deal with this issue?

Can you advise which one of your mattress is least likely to develop this issue please.

my last mattress was not cheap, 1700, so you imagine my disappointment.

many thanks

kind regards

Hi,
Thank you for your question. Hotels do not generally have the issue of the ridge down the middle as they are slept on by many different people with different sleep positions, which means the whole of the mattress gets used.
The ridge down the centre of your mattress is unused upholstery layers. All mattresses settle where you lie the most and this is not a fault but a sign that the upholstery fibres are behaving as they should. When a mattress is made, all the upholstery fibres are completely flat and level with the piping. Adding the piping and the tufts compacts the fibres and creates the domed area. A new mattress will always feel firmer than intended and as you sleep and move around on the mattress, the upholstery layers soften and flatten out.
As we are creatures of habit, we tend to sleep in the same position on the mattress, the upholstery layers in this area settle, however, this leaves the surrounding upholstery layers like new. This looks like the mattress has dipped or that there are raised areas on the surface of the mattress, especially in the larger sizes like kingsize and super kingsize where no one sleeps in the middle. By turning the mattress over on a regular basis and utilising the whole of the sleep surface, ie if you are in bed on your own, then sleep in the middle or if you are reading or watching TV in bed on your own then sit in the middle. By doing this, it will help to even out the settlement of the upholstery layers.
Deep micro fibre mattress topper 10cm
Adding a separate mattress topper to your mattress will provide you with a more even sleep surface while you settle the central area.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
