Artisan 002 vs Artisan 003 Hand Made Mattresses Compared
Hi, I have a number of questions regarding these two mattress models:
1. what are the key differences between Artisan 002 and 003? Is 003 worth the additional £1000?
2. Also, in terms of mattress depth, are both of these around 11" or is one deeper than the other?
3.What is the weight difference for these two mattresses - is one significantly heavier than the other? We are looking at Super King size (potentially zip and link).
Thank you so much!
Hi Elizabeth,
Thanks for your question about our natural fibre pocket sprung mattresses. It's a really good one!
All of the mattresses in the Artisan range feature high end natural fibres and from the Artisan Naturals model upwards they also feature a vanadium coated calico encased pocket spring, the same as Vispring and Savoir models.
Both of the Artisan models you're looking at have a twin up or dual layer pocket spring support system. This gives them a livelier feel than the single layer models such as the Artisan Bespoke 004. It's a subtle difference but a twin layer of springs can make a mattress feel more 'lively' especially if you're prone to fidgeting when you sleep. They react a bit faster for light sleepers. Both are available in a tension that matches your bodyweight. The tension does not indicate the overall feel of the mattress. That is provided by the upholstery and comfort layers.
Spring Tension | Wire diameter (Gauge) | Weight Range |
---|---|---|
Soft | 1.2mm | Bespoke Tension (Please Call) |
Medium | 1.4mm | Upto 16 stone |
Firm | 1.6mm | 16 stone plus |
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic | 1.9mm | 20 stone plus |
What's the difference between the Artisan 002 and Artisan 003?
The main differences are the volume of natural fibres and the comfort feel in the upholstery layers.
The Artisan Bespoke 003 contains a huge 5600GSM of 100% natural fibre fillings including Alpaca (one of the most expensive natural fibres in mattress construction). It has a medium to firmer feel in the top upholstery layer. Great for front sleepers or people who like a firmer feel. It has a 15 year guarantee.

The Artisan Bespoke 002 mattress is a softer feel in the top upholstery layer with a deeper sink. Perfect for side sleepers or people who like to sink deeply into their mattress. It features 3600gsm of 100% natural fibre fillings. It has a 10 year guarantee.

2. Mattress Depths Explained
Both of these mattresses are around 11" in depth even, though the ARtisan Bespoke 003 has significantly more fillings. This is because they are both tufted and compressed to roughly the same depth give or take 2-3cm depending on the GSM volume. The tufts keep the layers under a consistent tension and help the mattress keep its loft. Without tufting mattress fibres would settle and migrate around over time. Tufting prevents these and keeps the mattress looking uniform.
3. What is the weight difference between the Artisan 002 and Artisan 003 mattresses?
The Artisan Bespoke 003 is 85kg in a super kingsize than the Artisan 002 is 75kg. In a zip and link they will be slightly heavier when combined as you have two extra borders and perimeters hand sown as a two piece. Our mattresses are very heavy as there is so much in them. They do all have firm edge borders and handles for turning. A zip and link is far eaiser to turn than a one piece mattress so its a wise move you're looking at that in a super king. It also makes moving the mattress far easier if you change bedrooms or move house.
