Best mattress to squeeze upstairs!

Hi,
We have bought and constructed a super king slatted bedframe and then realised the stair clearance is tight for a super king mattress - rookie error! There is just one tight spot where there is 5’1 inch clearance for a 6 ft mattress. We have been warned that squishing the mattress can damage the metal rim that runs around the ‘perimeter’ of the mattress. We really want a medium hybrid with springs and a memory foam flat top (not buttoned)!and we don’t like zip links because of the dip it leaves in the middle.
One shop suggested we bought a Mammoth shine plus with 2000 springs as the edge is foam and has no metal so it could be squashed a bit without doing damage. The Mammoth was one of our favourites anyway so that would be good, but I’m really worried about damaging it. Do you think there is adequate ‘give’ in the mammoth to bring it upstairs without damage? I know we could get a boxed mattress but I wanted something better quality and I like the ‘bounce’ of some springs. We both hate the sensation of Tempur. Any advice or any other beds to consider? Thank you.

Hi Mia,

Having looked at the mattress you mentioned, this has a firm feel. This would be ok if you sleep on your back and this is your prefered comfort level.  I would suggest you check with the retailer of manufacture to make sure that a slatted base would be ok with this mattress. It may be that you would need to board over the slats with MDF or Plywood to give the mattress an even surface.  If you would prefer a different comfort level there are many manufacturers of mattresses in boxes, with and without springs.

Another alternative would be a solid latex mattress that you would be able to squeeze upstairs.  I would recommend you try some of the Dunlopillo range before you make your purchase.  We are not currently producing our Fusion and Hybrid ranges due to sourcing difficulties of the high-quality materials needed, although you may find some on our outlet section or our eBay page.
